Rudi and Sue Lenz's chimpanzees from Holland go through their madcap paces with the timing and ease of born performers in Kingling Barnum Bailey's circus coming to Boston Garden May 18-31.

Credit such smoothness, however, to the skill and sensitivity of their trainers. "Chimps, when they first come to us from animal dealers, are either spiteful and vicious, or cowardly and afraid, declared Sue Lenz who, with her husband Rudi, has chimps walking on stilts, participating in a horse race, impersonating Indians at a tribal war dance and playing the role of the Beatles "in concert" at this year's performance. "It takes six months to get to know each chimp, his individual likes and dislikes. Only then can we begin to train him," Sue continued. The Lenzes must really work to gain the confidence of the animals.

They have been fed and sheltered prior to joining Ring-ling Bros, but seldom have they been given the love and attention which is showered upon them by the circus couple. "We have seven chimps, six who perform. The baby hasn't begun to train yet. He's a little love," Sue said enthusiastically. Learning what food each chimp favors is vital.

Food fruit, candy, corn is the chimp's payola or reward when he performs well. The chimps are very temperamental. "The whole chimp troupe gets mad if we speak to anyone just before we go on," she reported. "So we must learn a lot of little crafty ways in catering to their tastes and temperaments." New this year is an iron jaw trick performed on a motorized boat. "Chimps can always do somersaults, but we wanted them to do something which humans also do.

When they learned they could do it quicker than when their trainers would spin them, they liked to do it themselves," she said. This part of their act takes place so quickly that Sue believes the audience seldom senses the amount of work required to perfect it.

The entire act must be done with split-second timing for it must conclude simultaeously with the two acts on either side of the chimps' center ring. America itself didn't surprise the couple as much as its circus performances. "In Europe, the circus is presented in individual acts. When you are fresh from there, the three-ring FURNISHED APARTMENTS show surprises you. You think American audiences aren't appreciative.

But in the end, the audience does applaud in a way that is most rewarding," Sue stated. The chimps travel with the circus in a specially-built truck that has a big playroom with windows on one side and formica walls and a heater. Chimps don't like the cold and must have temperatures around 65 to 70 degrees, Sue explained. When they go to colder climates, she dresses them in extra thick vests. She makes all their clothes including the sailor suits they wear in the iron jaw trick.
