28 THE BOSTON GLOBE SATURDAY. MARCH 16. 1985 from feeble minds Eclectic Tetes Noires band raises a few eyebrows It used to be enough tor such houses to slm- MOVIE ply scare their REVIEW luckless inhabi-tants to death. But they've become much more diabolically energetic. It's almost as if they've turned into allegories of the death grip of high mortgage payments and other hazards of home ownership.

"Superstition." the latest but far from best in the evil real estate sweepstakes, lurches bumpily along In the wake of such bloody milestones as Horror" and 'The House on Cemetery Hill." It's a how-muoh-can-you-take? splatflick, the kind in which church elders lose no time moving a family into the house with the bloody history, and disheveled descendants of witches light lots of candles and mutter dire warnings on the sidelines. The survival rate is low, as the house and adjoining black lake bend eagerly to the task of getting people. One decapitated victim's head explodes a microwave oven. Another victim is guillotined by a window through which he tries to escape. Another is spiked to the floor in an attic.

A churchman is killed by a circular saw blade that flies through his chest. And so on. Each time we accompany the bouncing hand-held camera down the hallway to the tune of the Dies Irae and heavy breathing, we know what to expect. Then a witch who wasn't quite executed in 1692 starts assuming the lent Femmes. a caustic nature that recalls the Waitresses, and a penchant for busy-bee harmony vocals that recalls the Roches.

Add to this porridge a left-wing, feminist bent and an appreciation of schlock humor and you've got a band guaranteed to raise a. few. eyebrows. Their final song Thursday was an arch, a cappella rendition of Billy Idol's "White Wedding." But the scattered (and ever diminishing) crowd was restless -and for good reason. Tetes Noires 40-minute set produced two main responses: aggravation and boredom.

The aggravation came mostly from the sour, off-key vocal harmonies, the poor vocal mix. and the misplaced aura of underground "importance" that surrounds the band. (They've received a heap of favorable press, including a cover story in last month's Rockbill magazine.) The boredom came from the simplistic guitar chording. the too-silly or alternately too-snide mannerisms, and the overall lack of strong melodic substance. This was thin, trivial music.

By Jim Sullivan Special to The Globe I have nothing against inspired amateurism. Rock 'n' roll, after all, was conceived by inspired amateurs. I cer- MUSIC tainly have REVIEW nothing against inspired female amateurs.

The Raincoats and the Slits, for example, were two fine late-'70s bands that were affecting in their bash-it-out, post-punk amateurism. I do, however, have a problem with insipid amateurism: Such was the case at Spit Thursday night when Tetes Noires, an all-female sextet from Minneapolis, held center-stage. From a conceptual standpoint, Tetes Noires' approach holds a certain promise. They're nothing if not eclectic, and eclectic pop music is generally worth pursuing. Tetes Noires, fronted by singer-violinist Jennifer Holt, draw from the minimalism of both folk and punk styles.
