THE BOSTON GLOBE WEDNESDAY, JUNE 29, 1988 43 BI7EJAC21GG Peter Solonjon, 69 Harold Jobes, 91 Edward Hoelm, 79 If Longtime coach at Dartmouth Up) 1 LB I itzJ Retired shoe manufacturer Peter Herman Solomon, a retired shoe manufacturer and a leader in the American footwear I industry, died of lung cancer yes-J terday at his home in Cambridge. He was 69. Mr. Solomon joined the Joseph M. Herman Shoe Co.

of Millis and Scarborough, Maine, in 1940, the year he graduated from Harvard College. He was president of the company from 1945 to 1973, and during that period one of its best-, known products was the insulat-; ed "Survivor boot." In the 1970s Mr. Solomon was the first chairman of the can Shoe Center, in Philadelphia, and also a lobbyist for the group. In 1978 he brought together the American Footwear Industries Association, the National Shoe Retailers Association and the Volume Footwear Retailers of Amer-rr ica to form a nonprofit organization called National Shoe Fair of America. He was its chairman un-; til 1985 and at the time of his death was its senior consultant.

Born in Boston, Mr. Solomon i i rM ti u. Retired investment counsel Harold Dean Jobes of Weston, a retired investment counsel, died yesterday in Wilmington, N.C., where he had attended his grandson's wedding in May. He was 91. Mr.

Jobes worked for William Albert Gallup Inc. of Boston from 1937 until his retirement in 1967. Previously he was a chartered life underwriter with Massachusetts Mutual Insurance Co. and district manager for Crocker Wheeler Co. Born in Staten Island, N.Y., he graduated from Pratt Institute and was an ensign in the Navy during World War an aviator piloting free balloons and dirigibles over Florida.

Mr. Jobes was a member of the Boston Security Analysts Society and from 1953 to 1967 was treasurer of the Bishop and Trustees and the Diocesan Investment Trust of the Episcopal Church of Massachusetts. Until last month he swam one-third of a mile a day on average at the Wayland Town House Pool. He was also photographer and member of the Boston and Needham camera clubs, where he enjoyed competitions with his slides taken during extensive travels. Mr.

Jobes leaves a daughter, Carolyn Kiradjieff of Wayland; a granddaughter, Laura Goode of Brookline; and a grandson, Dean Kiradjieff of Brighton. gICTUUaLl.U 11 Will 1WJ1UU1 School in 1936. Edward G. Hoehn, tennis and squash coach at Dartmouth Col lege from 1938 to 1963, died Monday at Cape Cod Community Hos pital. He was 79 and lived in Cen terville. Mr. Hoehn suffered a stroke in 1984.

After leaving Dartmouth, he was the head tennis professional at Longwood Cricket Club, Brook line, during the summers until 1969 and at the Badminton and Tennis Club of Boston during the winters until 1974. Mr. Hoehn, known as Red. was ranked among the top 10 squash players in the United States in the late 1930s. In coaching both sports at Dartmouth, his basic teaching technique was to play matches against two or three of his players each day.

Mr. Hoehn served in World War II as a Marine Corps major. He was administrative officer of an attack squadron aboard the aircraft carrier Bennington in 1945 during the final stages of the Pacific campaign through the raids on Tokyo. Born in Rochester, N.Y., where he learned tennis on city play grounds, Mr. Hoehn graduated from the University of Rochester in 1930.

He majored in engineer ing and played on the tennis team and as a tailback on the football team. He was a sales engineer for Taylor Instrument in Philadelphia and Boston, from 1930 to 1938. Mr. Hoehn leaves his wife, Phyllis A. (Naylor); two sons, Rich ard of Marshfield and Edward G.

3d of Burlington, Vt; a daughter, Nancy A. Drake of Deerfield, and nine grandchildren. Services will be private. Salvatore Tarbi Edited East Boston newspaper Salvatore (Sal) Tarbi, 68, of East Boston, former co-publisher and news editor of The East Bos ton Times, died last night at the Veterans Administration Medical Center in Jamaica Plain after a long illness. A lifelong resident of East Bos ton, he was an Army veteran of World War II, where he served as an X-ray technician in the medical corps.

He served in England and in Germany. After the war, he was a violinist for the German Symphony Orchestra. After several months in the orchestra, he returned home to his family in East Boston. He also played the organ and bass. He leaves his wife, Edith Tarbi; two daughters, Rose Tarbi and Charlene Tarbi; two brothers, Charles Tarbi and Frank Tarbi; and two sisters, Sarah Agostino and Mary Caldarone; and a granddaughter, all of East Boston.

Funeral arrangments were incomplete. Stuart W. Cook, 79 A retired insurance broker Stuart W. Cook, a retired independent insurance broker and a longtime resident of Concord, died of heart failure Saturday in He-lensvale, Queensland, Australia. He was 79.

Mr. Cook moved to Australia in 1980 after ending his association with Field Cowles of Boston. Born in Newton, he attended Middlesex School in Concord and LeRosey School in Switzerland and graduated from Harvard College in 1932. He was a lieutenant commander in the Navy in the Pacific during World War II. While living in Concord, Mr.

Cook was treasurer of the Concord Players, a member and treasurer of the Concord Country Club and a member of the Fay Club of Fitch-burg. He leaves his wife, Helen (McConnell); a son, David of Monterey, a daughter, Margot Cook of Melbourne, Australia; a brother, G. Gardner of Lunenburg, and two grandchildren. Services were held in Australia. Caroline Maturi, 87 Retired Gillette supervisor Caroline Maturi of Somervllle, a supervisor with Gillette Co.

in Boston for more than 25 years, died Monday at Somerville Hospital. She was 87. Miss Maturi retired from Gillette in 1955. She was born in Philadelphia and grew up in Bristol, R.I., later moving to Somerville, where she lived most of her life. She was a communicant of St.

Catherine of Genoa Church, Somervllle. A funeral Mass will be said at 10 a.pi. tomorrow in Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Church in Bristol, R.I. Portrait of the Great American Investor Ethel Burnett, 95 Wrote book on life in Quiney Ethel (Turner) Burnett, author of "The Way We Lived," an account of life in Quincy at the turn of the century, died June 3 at Oak Bluffs Retirement Center in Clearwater, Fla.

She was 95 and also had a home in Melvin Village, N.H. Born in South Robbinston, Maine, and educated in the Quincy public schools, Mrs. Burnett worked at the Army's payroll office in Boston during World War II and was a longtime resident of Jamaica Plain. She spent four decades tracing her ancestors to 15th century France. Mrs.

Burnett leaves a son, Howard W. Jr. of Annapolis, two sisters, Winifred McDougal of Winnetka, 111., and Helen Frye of Melrose, seven grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. DEATHS WALCOTT Of Boston Monday, June 27, Edna F. (Walker).
