64 THE BOSTON SUNDAY GLOBE OCTOBER 30, 1988 jf' -i Holy Cross does defense, 7-0 it with By Joe Burris Contributing Reporter HAMILTON. N.Y. For a while, it looked as if Holy Cross would never score. Time and time again, the Crusaders found their drives stopped short of the goal line. So the defense's job was simplified: Keep the Colgate offense stymied, COLONIAL LEAGUE come up with a big play and hope the Crusader offense can score a game-win All 6- 1-1 5-2-0 7- 2-0 2-6-0 2-6-0 0-8-0 Conl.

Thanks to linebacker Rob Mc-Govern, who intercepted a pass at the Colgate 1 1 that set up a 2-yard touchdown run by tailback Darin Cromwell with 6:20 left. Holy Cross managed a hard-fought 7-0 win over Colgate yesterday before an Andy Kerr Stadium crowd of 4,500. McGovern's interception capped an exceptional and necessary effort by the Holy Cross defense, which registered nine sacks and limited Colgate to 67 yards total offense. Only 7 of those yards came after halftime. The Crusaders picked off four passes and recovered two fumbles. "Every time we went on the field, we knew we were going to shut them down," said McGovern, whose interception came one play after a Holy Cross fumble. "It was a great feeling.

There was no way they were going to move the ball. We knew we were going to shut them down." But the Holy Cross offense can't grin at the Red Raiders' offensive woes. Despite rolling up 316 yards on the day, the Crusaders came up scoreless on six drives inside the Colgate 15-yard line. On two of those drives, Scott Kania missed 32-yard field goals. The Crusaders were 0 for 8 on third-down conversions in the first half and converted only twice in the second half.

"I can't say enough about the play of our defense," said Holy Cross coach Mark Duffner. "And when our offense had to have it on fourth down, it came through." Well, at least it did on the touchdown drive. Holy Cross was 1 for 4 until then. "We blew some opportunities," said Duffner, "but the bottom line is that we came up with the win. Colgate played a hellish game.

A lot of the credit goes to them." Several players in the Holy Cross offense had great individual efforts, including fullback Joe Se-greti, who gained 126 yards on 30 carries, marking the fourth consecutive game he has gone over the 100-yard mark. Quarterback Jeff Wiley was 16 of 31 for 185 yards, putting him over the mark for his career. It marked only the sixth time a Division 1-AA quarterback has reached that milestone. The touchdown run came on a fake draw play to Segreti and an option pitch to Cromwell, who darted right untouched to the end zone. "The coaches decided we had to go outside, because when we went inside they were crushing it," said Cromwell.

"It was a heads-up pitch by Jeff and as soon as I got it, I ran it in." Colgate quarterback Damon Phelan, benched the previous game for disciplinary reasons, was yanked for backup Dave Goodwin on the next possession. But it didn't matter. McGovern picked off Goodwin's first pass, enabling the Crusaders to run down the clock. is halted as defense muffles Brown, 28-3 Five-game sldd DARIN CROMWELL Game's lone TD Harvard, 28-3 at Harvard Stadium Harvard 0 0 21 7 28 Brown 3 0 0 0 3 8 Stephen Uns 24 FG Jim Reidy 1 run Alan Hall kick) Neil Phillips 15 pass from Rod MacLeod (Hall kick) MacLeod 1 ran (Hall kick) Silas Myers 23 run (Hall kick) Attendance 14,900. Harvard put together a drive from its 34 to the Brown 15. Alan Hall attempted a 36-yard field goal, but it was wide. Just prior to that, Yohe limped off the field and was replaced by Rod MacLeod. Harvard's defense remained excellent in the second quarter.

The Crimson started drives on their own 36, 6, 20 and 30, but couldn't muster a decent attack. The Brown defense also was playing well. But Brown didn't manage a first down in the period. "We wanted to be careful in the first half," said Brown coach John Rosenberg. "We were ahead.

But we didn't get the run game going and that put us in too many third-and-long situations. We went the entire third period without a first down and that hurt, too."
