And again anchoring the rhythm is the bare-bones cocktail drum of Billy Conway, who proves you don't need a mountain of tomtoms and high-hats to sell records.

The band ripples through the blues with an '80s cool-cat attitude, born of playing punk clubs as well as roadhouses. If you like your blues tongue-in-cheek, there's "Junkyard," about a man who rides around looking for junky artifacts to mold Into "modern art." Or there's "Big Medicine," a playful look at the false bravado of various stimulants. Or the "King of Beers," a more whimsical Sandman tune about drowning sorrows and ending up with "a table of empties." The most likely hit is the title tune, "Tied to the Tracks," a syncopated, acoustic-flavored blues as fast-paced as the train described therein. Then there's the all-over-the-map blues of Boston's Treat Her Right. An uncategorizable fixture in Boston clubs, the group has a new album, "Tied to the Tracks" (RCA), due out a week from Tuesday. It's a lively followup to their debut, "Treat Her Right," which shoved them into the national spotlight and featured the hit, "I Think She Likes Me," about finding romance in where else? a cfctb." Treat Her Right excels at a neo-primitive blues that skips across genres, but owes mostly to the early, lowdown Chicago sound of Howlin' Wolf and Muddy Waters.

That is, there's no piano or bass (guitarist Mark Sandman simulates bass by playing the lower strings of his six-string guitar); and there's a taboo on cluttering or sweetening the sound with unnecessary instrumentation. "We do have an aesthetic: Keep it simple at all costs," Sandman has said. "Resist the temptation to add. If you're going to do something to a song, subtract."
