VINCENNES SUN-COMMERCIAL, WEDNESDAY, JUNE 28, 1989 page; Soviet obituary praises defector-spy Mayor may attend change of command ful spy," Kessler said in a tele phone interview from his Potomac, home. "It's possible that he took this Russian name after he defected." Kessler said Souther referred to. "my life's vicissitudes" in a letter he sent the writer this month. "He was perhaps having second thoughts or having trouble adjust---ing over there," Kessler said. Souther enlisted in the Navy in 1975 and was honorably dis-" charged in 1982 with the rank of.

He said Souther's parents and brother traveled to Moscow from the United States for the funeral. Some of the people who knew Souther as a Russian major at Old Dominion University speculated he committed suicide because of his disillusionment with the Soviet Union.

Other theories also were being discussed. "They used him like a spider playing with a moth and when they were going to finish with lim, they finished with him," said Barbara Fahey, a professor's wife who knew him in school. Others said he could have turned Soviet spy but they doubt he was a mole who masqueraded as an American during four years at Old Dominion and an eight-year Navy enlisted career that included intelligence work. "He was not a Soviet. I can assure you of that," said Ms.

Fa-hey's husband, John, a retired Navy commander who taught Russian to Souther at Old Do minion. Fahey said the Soviets may have described Souther as one of their own prevent the United States from investigating his death. "Despite glasnost, disinformation is not dead in the Soviet Union," he said. The Faheys remembered Souther as a prankster who loved to be the center of attention. "He wanted to be the life of the party," Mrs.

Fahey said. "I felt he was screaming out to be seen and heard." Souther's outgoing personality may have been ill-suited to the Soviet Union, the Faheys said. "I'm sure he was depressed after they got through with him and debriefed him. He would not get the recognition or attention there," Fahey said. "The dismal life there I'm sure was a shock to him." Ronald Kessler, a writer preparing a book on Souther, said his research shows Souther was an American who became a Soviet spy.

In the new position, Gee will command 55 ships organized into four destroyer squadrons, operating out of Norfolk. Whan back at sea, he will function as a carrier battle group commander.

Gee was selected for promotion to rear admiral in January 1987, while still in command of the VINCENNES. However, he did not receive the rank until last October. Gee said he will be glad to get back to sea after two years in the Pentagon. "That's why I joined the Navy and that's where my heart is," he said. Mayor William D.

Rose said he will try to attend the Aug. 11 change of command ceremony in Norfolk. in which Rear Adm. G.N. "Nick" Gee will become commanding officer of Cruiser-Destroyer Group 8.

Gee was the first commanding officer of the USS VINCENNES (CG-49), serving through her 1984 christening and July 6, 1985, commissioning until the spring of 1987. Rose attended both the christening and commissioning ceremonies in Pascagoula, and was aboard ship during a shakedown cruise. "It's an honor to be invited to the ceremony by the first captain of the USS VINCENNES. and an honor for the city as well," Rose said. "At least Nick Gee hasn't forgotten us and we haven't forgotten him, either." Rose said he plans to fly to Vir EVERY WEDNESDAY CHICKEN FRIED STEAK WCOUNTRY GRAVY, POTATO TOAST NORFOLK, Va.

(AP) To those who knew Glenn Michael Souther before he defected to the Soviet Union, he was a rambunctious college student who liked to play pranks. But his obituary Tuesday in the Soviet military newspaper Red Star called him a KGB spy who "made a great contribution to maintaining the Soviet Union's security." Souther, 32, was a longtime Soviet intelligence agent named Mikhail Yevgenievich Orlov, the paper said. The report said he died suddenly Thursday but gave no details. But The Guardian newspaper of London quoted Gen. Vladimir Kryuchkov, the head of the KGB, as saying that Souther committed suicide.

"It was a tragic thing. He committed suicide," Kryuchkov was quoted as saying in an interview in Moscow on Tuesday. Souther was "a KGB major and a very honest lad. He had felt bad for some time. He was under massive nervous tension because he worked for a long time in very difficult conditions," he told the newspaper.

Kryuchkov said Souther left behind a Russian wife and daughter and was buried Monday in the Mrs. DeBoer to be honored Barbara DeBoer will be the honored guest at a retirement party Thursday hosted by Vincennes University Alumni Association and Trailblazer Booster Club.
