"Love Song" (Margarita Merri-man) employed semi-blasphemous children's rhymes and "Jesus Loves Me" and plainly hankered to exist happily somewhere as an encore piece.

A dramatic scena, "Magnolia" (Marjorie Jeffries), nicely suited the broad, forward aspects of Judith Kellock's vocal projection. A Denise Levertov setting, "Snail." "Some- (Eugenia Frothingham) sported art old-fashioned kind of melodic distinction, "Andromeda Rag" (Elizabeth Vercoe) an old-fashioned kind of rhythmic gumption and a piano part that was thick as brown paste. In Minuetta Kessler's violin-piano "Sonata Concertante" (1974) a masterly technique, buttressed an esthetic of appalling naivete: One imagined a sort of dance around the teepee for the, little ones superimposed on the Rach- maninov Third Piano Concerto. Muscular performances here by Sharan Leventhal and the composer.

For Lili Boulanger's rather overextended, Faure-like "Clair-ieres dans le ciel," Kellock sang truly, fully, with admirable control, but in a vague generic European rather an identifiable French. Wednesday's event, on its much smaller scale, offered itself as a trailer, perhaps yielding a clue, or two to the tone of what's to come. We can report that a goodly diversity was in evidence, a lively ranging up and down the spectrum from provincialism to sophistication and back.

A pair of unaccompanied-violin pieces opened: Ann Stimson's spare and modest "Chant" (1985); and Pamela Marshall's distinctly more bravura "Arcanum" (1977). which was a tiny anthology of angular motions, uses of multiple stops, the dancing bow, and such, tapering off to a quiet close. Of art songs there were five.
