CUPD -Three Duke University students, attempting to set a national bench-sitting record, have endured of the area's coldest temperatures this fall.

The trio, all members of Sigma Nu Fraternity, today completed their second day of bench sitting in an attempt to raise $10,000 for a new gymnasium at Duke. Temperatures have been in the 20s the coldest so far this fall. They began their assault on the 100-hour record at 4 p.m. Wednesday. One of the sitters, Canarsie Daniels, 18, took his midterm economics exam on the bench Thursday.

Clad in long underwear and a parka, Daniels said he "wasn't too sure" how he did on the test. Charge Dropped SEATTLE (UPI) Officials of Pacific Northwest Bell are "disappointed" that a charge of fradulenl use of telephones was dropped against actor Bob Cummings. The State Supreme Court tossed out the charge Thursday because it has been filed in Justice Court in Seattle. "We are disappointed that the Bob Cummings case alleging criminal fraud against the telephone company has been i i technical grounds," the phone company said in a statement Thursday. "We will take all legal me'ans availble to us to protect the interests of all of our customers," the statement added.

Single Tax Rate LOS ANGELES (UPI) -Treasury Secretary William Simon says he hopes to submit a tax reform plan eliminating all loopholes and setting a single tax rate by the end of this year. Simon, speaking at a news conference Thursday, gave no other details of the plan and did not say whether he had discussed the measure with President Ford. Citing a 40 per cent federal budget increase in the past two years, Simon also suggested that the government has grown so big in recent years that it could become "a threat to a free society."
