Casimir Myslinski, Pitt's new director, made the an- r.uouncement Monday at a news Iconference. Myslinski said the new coach succeed Dave Hart would probably be announced within week. SC Ironmen HandLaSalls -V First Defeat PHILADELPHIA (UPI) South Carolina's quintet of iron- men, four of them only sophomores, handed LaSalle its first 'defeat 62-59 Monday night and won the Quaker City basketball 'tournament. The Gamecocks starting five played the entire game and withstood tremendous pressure from LaSalle in the closing minutes. South Carolina became the second out of town team to win the tournament. St. John's, a finalist in the Holiday Festival Tournament in New York, used an upset victory over second-ranked and previously unbeaten North Carolina to vault into the No. 10 spot ournaments reached a climax. The first four places in the atings remained the same as a week ago with UCLA, North larolina, Davidson and Ken- holding those positions.

The 35-member UPI Coaches lating Board once again gave JCLA a unanimous vote as the nation's No. 1 team. The 35 first )lace votes gave Coach John Wooden's Bruins a perfect total of 350 points based on a 10-9-8-76-5-4-3-2-1 basis. North Carolina, a 72-70 upset victim to St. John's in the in the rankings.

Columbia, also a finalist in he Rainbow Classic Tournament at Honolulu, climbed to the No. 14 position as the Lions carried an 8-0 mark into the Hawaiian meet. Middle positions in the ratings were reshuffled and two school --New Mexico and Notre Dam --fell from the top 10 as th rloliday Festival, managed to hang on to second place although the Tar Heels' point total fell to 238-- a drop of 67 from the previous week. The Tar Heels (71) held a five point edge over Davidson (7-0), the No. 3 team with 238 points.

Steady Kentucky, responsible for Notre Dame's exit from the i merry whirl of post-Christmas ratings, held the No. 4 spot with 227 points. The Wildcats pushed their record to 6-1 by bouncing Notre Dame 110-90. Muscular Santa Clara, a finalist opposite Columbia in the Rainbow Classic, replaced Villanova in the No. 5 spot.

The Broncos carried a 9-0 record into the Honolulu finale. Kansas, improving with every game and the favorite for the Big Eight championship, moved up two notches to sixth place with 107 points. Next in line was Villanova, a first-time loser this season, in the No. 7 spot with 92 points. The Wildcats suffered their initial loss of the Quaker Tournament at Philadelphia.

Lew Alcindor was booed in his hometown New York but scored 30 points and took down 22 rebounds in pacing UCLA to its 24th consecutive victory over a two-season period. UCLA led St. John's by only 31-27 at halftime but by that time Alcindor had both men assigned to guard him in foul trouble and the Bruin; quickly took command in the second half. The Bruins opened a 10-point margin and led by as many as 23 points the rest the way. a a scored its 10th straight victory and won the Big Eight Tournament for the fifth time in seven years with an easy win over Oklahoma State.

Gary Major and Jarrett Durham fouled out for the Dukes in the free scoring contest. Garry Nelson led the Dukes with 26 points, followed by Dur- the first half but Derry outscored Shannock 27-23 in second half to tie the game at end of four quarters, 52-all. Derry outscored Shannock 8-1 in the extra period to win. The game took place on the Derry floor. Shannock is now 2-6 for the season.

Derry outscored Shannock from the open court, caging 23 field goals out of 72 shots for 32 per cent. Shannock made 15 out of 53 for 28 per cent. The Spartans outseored Derry at the foul line, caing 23 ou of 42 for 55 per cent. Derry made 14 out of 32 for 44 per cent. Scoring in double figures for Shannock were Rick Maffei, 15 Randy Punchard, 11 Bill ones with 9: Punchard and indy Bodnar with seven each.
