Finley became a three-letter man in sports today with the acquisition of the American Basketball Association's Memphis franchise. When Board Chairman John "Buddy" Uake and ABA attorney Martin Heller return to Memphis later today, they wilJ start the sales procedure.

It will take about 10 days for the 4,618 stockholders to vote on the sale and the Memphis executives are certain they can get the 51 per cent vote required for the transaction. The Memphis franchise was saved from dissolution by Finley's llth-hpur purchase. The ABA Board of voted earlier Tuesday to buy the Pittsburgh and Floridians franchises, which in effect disbanded the clubs. The same fate awaited the Pros, who had moved to Memphis from New Orleans two years ago and were backed by a public stock subscription. "Zip" Veracola, former Washington Redskin football player and now a Dallas realtor, bid for the Pros and then withdrew his offer Tuesday.

"Things were pretty sticky for a while." Lcake said. "We were within 90 of losing our franchise after a motion was made for the league to buy the Pros. Then we told them about Finley and the trustees were aware of his standing in the sports community." Finley is Contacted Avron Fogelman, the club president, and Memphis attor- ney'Alan Kosten asked that the purchase motion be tabled. Finley was contacted, forwarded the $110,000 owed the ABA by the Pros and agreed to pay sonic $170,000 in debts to the club creditors. The demise of the Pittsburgh and Floridian clubs the ABA with nine teams and an iinmediate scramble was made for their players.

The. four.worst teams in the league standings received two picks each before their talented brethren were allowed, to choose. Memphis, picking first, took George Thompson from Pittsburgh and Denver selected Warren Jabali the Floridians. Carolina then picked Mike from Pitt- Dallas chose'John Brisker of Pittsburgh. Dallas, in its second choice, selected Skeeter Swift of Pittsburgh; Carolina Mack Calvin of the picked Willie -Lbng'of the Floridians; and Memphis took Ron Franz of the Floridians.
