Finley became a three-letter man in sports today with the acquisition of the American Basketball Association's Memphis franchise. The sale hadn't been finalized, but club officials meeting at 10 a.m. EOT in Chicago foday with the owner of Baseball's Oakland Athletics and the California Golden Seals the; National Hockey League sure Finley will have his Buys Memphis as Pittsburgh Franchise Folds pwtslo3mwitb 1 min Ol third pro sports team within two weeks. When Board Chairman John "Buddy" Uake and ABA attorney Martin Heller return to Memphis later today, they wilJ start the sales procedure.

It will take about 10 days for the 4,618 stockholders to vote on the sale and the Memphis executives are certain they can get the 51 per cent vote required for the transaction. The Memphis franchise was saved from dissolution by Finley's llth-hpur purchase. The ABA Board of voted earlier Tuesday to buy the Pittsburgh and Floridians franchises, which in effect disbanded the clubs. The same fate awaited the Pros, who had moved to Memphis from New Orleans two years ago and were backed by a public stock subscription. "Zip" Veracola, former Washington Redskin football player and now a Dallas realtor, bid for the Pros and then withdrew his offer Tuesday.

"Things were pretty sticky for a while." Lcake said. "We were within 90 of losing our franchise after a motion was made for the league to buy the Pros. Then we told them about Finley and the trustees were aware of his standing in the sports community." Memphis, picking first, took George Thompson from Pittsburgh and Denver selected Warren Jabali the Floridians. Carolina then picked Mike from Pitt- Dallas chose'John Brisker of Pittsburgh. Dallas, in its second choice, selected Skeeter Swift of Pittsburgh; Carolina Mack Calvin of the picked Willie -Lbng'of the Floridians; and Memphis took Ron Franz of the Floridians.
