14 THE HOSTON r.l out; SATURDAY. DECEMBER 5. 1987 0 I I Stay away from The Stranger' A powerful update 'Still Killing STILL KILLING US SOFTLY Documentary by Jean Kilbourne. At the, Brattle Theater, Cambridge, presented by the Boston chapter of the National Organization of Women, tomorrow at I unrated. By Jay Carr Globe Staff In 1979, media critic Jean Kil bourne made a film called "Killim? fs Softly." Focusing on images of fomen In advertising, it showed incisively how advertising is more than sexist, how It helps create a (JHmate that makes violence more acceptable and turns women's bodies into commodities.

"Still filling Us Softly." Kilbourne's njw imn, is an upaate. anything, she says, the situation is rwrse. Advertising, she points out her slide lecture, depends on faking people feel insecure men as well as women. The idea Is tfiat, unless you Ingest, smear yourself with and otherwise THE STRANGER Written by Dan Gurskls. Directed by Adolfo Arlstaraln.

At the Beacon Hill, rated R. By Robert Garrett Special to the Globe This Is definitely not an adaptation of the existential novel of the same title by Camus. In fact, the only thing existential about the movie is the question you'll probably pose to yourself if you go to see it: "Why am I here?" An amnesia patient has witnessed a murder, and her therapist must help her piece together her identity and what happened. The murderers hover nearby, waiting to kill her after she has divulged an important piece of information. The Hitchcock-like plot elements are here, but this mystery The Outing' is THE OUTING A film directed by Tom Daley, written and produced by Warren Chaney, starring Deborah Winters, James Huston, Danny D.

Daniels and Andra St. Ivanyl, at the Beacon Hill and suburbs, rated (violence and nudity). By Michael Blowen Globe Staff A gang of toughs assaults an old lady and steals a magic lamp. They remove a jewel from the lamp and an evil force is unleashed. It kills the delinquents.

Later, a bunch of high school kids spend the night in a museum where the curse lurks. This is just the beginning of the hokey, mum-bo-jumbo that makes "The Outing" a loser from first frame to last. There aren't even any unintentional laughs. Of course, there are a few moments where the special effects wizards strut their stuff. In this case, an archaelogist gets his head turned by a ceiling fan and several kids get done In by flying, slashing objets d'art.

Peter Riegert stars as a graceless shrink.

He's paired a hopelessly flat-footed cop who's idea of solving the crime is to shout at the amnesiac witness because she can't remember aaf-thing. Riegert's approach isjo speak psychobabble, and makja clumsy and unethical romantic advance toward his patient. i Part of the plot involves two of the film's characters who watch a schlocky murder mystery. And so we have the unintended irony ofa bad movie within a bad movie.Jn the end. Riegert attempts to explain to the dim-witted cop the convoluted mystery.

The real mystery is how Riegert got stuck, in "The Stranger," which is quiiu.a come-down from his starring role In the charming "Local Hero." a hokey loser If there was just a glimmer, pf talent in the acting, "The Outing" might be seen as a learning experience for a future star. Phallic imagery isn't new In advertising, but, as Kilbourne shows In her well-chosen illustrations, it's being used much more blatantly now. Young girls as well as adult women often are draped submissively and longingly over a series of thinly-disguised phallic symbols, tacitly reinforcing child porn's claim to legitimacy and the assertion that innocence is sexy. From images of little girls used as sex objects, it's a predictable leap to the cold, detached violence being pushed by affectless New Wave types, such as the woman's corpse in a garbage can depicted In one jaggedly chic ad or the dismemberment and submission to maie violence to be found in others. Everyone has an illusion of being personally exempt from the blatancy of advertising and its No thrills or chills in 'Prom Night' HELLO MARY LOU: PROM NIGHT II Directed by Bruce Plttman, written by Ron Oliver. Starring Michael Ironside, Wendy Lyon, Justin Louis, Lisa Schrage.

Rated R. At the Charles Cinema. By Betsy Sherman Special to the Globe The makers of a little exploitation movie called "The Haunting of Hamilton High," in an astute -bit of trend-spotting, noticed that movies these days are either named after familiar song titles, or have the same name as a previously successful movie, with a roman numeral after it. So, to be doubly sure of smash success, they retitled their opus "Hello Mary Lou: Prom Night II." They were right, at least, to be concerned. "Hello Mary Lou" is a miserly slice-and-dicer: "Carrie" without the bucket of blood, "The Exorcist" without the green goop.

Originality is not a prerequisite on the exploitation circuit, but one would appreciate a new twist here and there, or some strong characterizations, or at least some great special effects, none of which is to be found here. A trunk in a musty old Hamilton High storeroom opens onto a flashback of 1957, when Mary Lou Maloney used to heat up the school corridors. Mary Lou was what they used to call fast: She writes her phone number in red lipstick on the wall of the church confessional. When she Jilts her rich boyfriend Billy at the prom, Billy drops a lighted stlnkbomb on her from the catwalk while she Is being crowned prom queen. Each day's barrage of images approximately 1,500 -wears us down, helping establish culture-wide criteria of normalcy.

Kilbourne hardly has to add that ads sell values as well as products, and that the values espoused by many of today's ads aren't healthy. Those who aren't young, beautiful and flawless are worthless, say even the most harmless ads, where wrinkles, blemishes, scars and even pores cease to exist. In Kilbourne's updated analysis, ads continue to teach men contempt for women and the feminine side of themselves. All encourage people to think that life's problems are best solved with products. Promoting product awareness, they work against other, better kinds.

With skill, humor and acuteness, Kilbourne encourages action against these society-weakening images. Never shrill, her indictment is, if anything, understated. WENDY LYON fair to foul. made of, they sure went up In flames awful quick. The scene returns to the present: Billy is now the high school principal, the guy he caught her with at the prom is now a priest, and Billy's son Craig goes with a nice girl named Vicki.

Vicki's strict mother won't let her buy a new dress for her senior prom, so she looks for a suitable costume in the school storeroom, opens the trunk, and unleashes the spirit of Mary Lou. which (we are later told by the priest) has been pacing around in purgatory just waiting for the chance to get revenge. It isn't until about an hour into the film that Mary Lou's raunchy spirit begins to take over the previously Pollyanna-like Vicki. Actress Wendy Lyon does a good Job making the transition from fair to foul. The film Is also somewhat enlivened by the presence of Michael Ironside, an actor who can suggest more menace with the whites of his eyes than most can with their whole bodies.

As the principal, he only gets to look terrified a couple of times, and doesn't get to look really Intense until the very end of the movie. Otherwise, the characters and cast members are run-of-the-mill. Movie Times Alltlon: "Hello Mary Lou: Prom Night II." 1, 3, 5. 7 20. 9 30, "Outing." 1:15, 3:15, 5:15.
