E.GAG5SGlLn3AE. 1EAGUI Harvard's defense stands roun A. its 2 cl9 C7 BJy ohn Powers Globe Staff PROVIDENCE They had lost the Cornell game in the final minutes, when Our Lady of Ithaca Intervened on fourth and epd zone. "So we told ourselves, never again," Harvard captain Kevin Dulsky said. "It will never happen again." lilt didn't happen last week, when the Crimson defense halted Princeton on the 10 with the game on the line.

And it didn't happen yesterday, either, as Harvard stopped Brown cold in the final two minutes to preserve a 14-9 triumph before 16,800 at Brown Stadium, and stay amid th jumble atop the Ivy standings. "All we know is, we weren't picked to be iri it," said Harvard coach Joe Restic, whose people are 6-1 for the first time since 174. "And we're in it." They're in it thanks to Dulsky and his briitish defenders, who stuffed Brown every time but once, when quarterback Mark Donovan found flanker Tom Smith alone for a 60-yard touchdown that made it 14-9 with 12.19 to play. And they're in it because quarterback Tom Yohe, who set a Crimson single-season passing mark yesterday (1,583 yards), keeps finding his good-hands people for first downs. Yesterday, Yohe was hurting after being kicked in the ribs.

"He wasn't the quarterback I know," Restic said. "He wasn't able to do all the things he can do." But Yohe already had run 9 yards for a touchdown on Harvard's first possession, and finished the day with 18 completions in 36 attempts for 196 yards. Combined with 110 yards on 21 carries and a 4-yard touchdown by halfback Tony Hinz, that was all the offense the Crimson needed. The day belonged to their defense, which harassed Donovan into a 6-for-19 day, sacked him thrice and stifled the Bruins Had Browri won, it would have taken a giant step toward its first league crown in 1 1 years. Instead, Harvard now controls its own destiny.

The Crimson play defending (but wobbly) champion Penn at home (where they've lost once to the Quakers since 1958) and Yale at the Bowl. Win both, and the Crimson are guaranteed a piece of the Ivy title. However, next week looms a date at Worcester with the same Holy Cross varsity that wasted the Crimson, 41-0, last year and mugged Brown by the same score last week. A few campus wags have suggested Restic send the JVs and preserve the regulars for the league chase. Restic, recalling Harvard's miracle finish at Fitton Field two years ago, will have none of it.

"They're on the schedule," he said. "We'll go up there storming. No question. That's the way you play it. That's the way you have to play it." five times when it mattered.

First, after a Harvard fumble gave Brown the ball on the Crimson 22 before halftime, Dulsky broke through to drop Donovan for a 13-yard loss and force Brown to settle for a field goal. In the third quarter, with Harvard leading, 14-3, adjuster Mike Von Rueden sacked Donovan for 13 more and produced a fourth and 37. Then Dulsky deflected a Donovan pass on the Harvard 16 that forced Brown to try and miss a field goal. And in the final period, the Crimson front line stacked up tailback Kirk Little on fourth and 1 at their own 27, and linebacker Kris Thabit broke up a fourth-down pass to Little with 1:20 left that would have kept the Bruins' final drive going. "Even when they didn't sack," mused Brown coach John Rosenberg, "it seerned like there were a lot of white jerseys advancing." It was a day to blitz and roll the dice.

0 2 15 0 By Jack Craig Globe Staff HANOVER, N.H. "It's a game we couldn't afford to lose," Yale coach Carm Cozza said. And they didn't, as Yale beat Dartmouth, 17-7, yesterday to remain In the Ivy League hunt with a 3-1 record, 5-2 overall. In a game long in tradition but quite short In big plays, the Ells shut out the Big Green after surrendering a touchdown on the first possession. Yale exhibited a swarming defense, led by linebacker Tony Cap-pelllno.

that repeatedly frustrated the Dartmouth offense, newly Installed by first-year coach Buddy Teevens. "jWe're just missing the big play," Teevens said, holding two fingers Inches apart. "We need a little more mental toughness." And a little more success. Dartmouth i.s 1-6 overall and 0-4 In Ivy comctition under Teevens. The partisan crowd of 11,131 cheered early but not often, as it turned out, when the Hlg Green went 62 yards the first time they had the ball for a 7-0 lead.

ii was a muscular drive with all but 13 yards carved Ix-tween Yale's tackles. Terry Phlllls leaped over the goal from a foot away for' the Jouehdown. the final 4 around right end. After its initial drive, the deepest Dartmouth penetration in the first half was to the Yale 18, where a field-goal try failed. Yale made it 17-7 at 10:22 of the third period when Andrew Walton kicked a 30-yard field goal to culminate a 67-yard drive that consumed 15 plays and five minutes.

The key play was a third-down, 14-yard completion from Ryan to Rich Schultc that kept the drive alive. A fourth-period Yale drive ended at the Darmouth 25, after which the Big Green went into a full aerial attack with 6:50 to play. Quarterback Chris Rorke hit Craig Morton for 20 yards, and then David Anderson on the Yale 21. After three lncomplellons. Rorke lilt Morton again In the deep corner of the end zone, but in a disputed call the play was ruled out of Ixnmds.

School was out, and later Cczza would insist he was not looking uhead to hosting Harvard (4-1) for a possible Ivy title. Before then, he emphasized, his squad must play tonghles Cornell (also 3-Dand Princeton (3 2). Dartmouth ran look with relief toward playing wlnless Columbia next Saturday. Yale Immediately traveled 78 yards to tie the game, with Dean Athanasia catching Kelly Ryan's 8-yard pass in a sea of green Jerseys near the end zone sideline. Yale took command of the contest on the next possession, scoring on 11 plays that covered 63 yards, with Mike Slewart going piiiiiu but Yale's Dob Snoop finds a roadblock in the form of Dartmouth's Michael Campanale.
