Red Sox vs. California July 13,1986. PAWTUCKET, R.I. The trade was seen by many as a simple swap. My arms for your arms, pjeda and Mitchell for Gardner and Schiraldi.

Throw in a couple of other guys as well, but we all know what this one is really bout. Had the preceding scenario been accurate, the Red Sox would have a lot of explaining to do. Bob Ojeda has a better record than bwight Gooden at New York and Uohn Mitchell is plowing through International League lineups. Meanwhile, Wes Gardner has been hurt and Calvin Schiraldi has been solid (9 saves), but not spectacular (3.71 ERA) in Paw-tucket relief. the Mets had traded away the weakest .300 hitter in their organization.

I didn't know they had that many .300 hitters." he says. Tarver had to sign as a free agent with the Mets in 1980, although he had been drafted three years earlier by the California Angels. Being taken in the 32d round didn't promise much of an immediate future however, and he decided to attend Sacramento State, not far from his native Fresno. Since then, he has abandoned first base and roamed the outfield, playing left and center with the Mets and now standing in right. "I'm not a typical right fielder." he admits.

"It's usually a big guy with power and with a cannon arm. My arm's not the strongest, but it's not the weakest either. It's just a matter of getting to the ball quick enough. I certainly don't consider myself a butcher in the field." Nottle scorns those who would disparage Tarver because his arm isn't quite Dwight Evans'. "If you can hit good in the major leagues, you have a good arm.

If you hit real good, you have a real good arm." 4 I I 60f I COKE, SPRITE, DIET COKE, COCA-COLA CLASSIC 2 Liter Bottles CoX cn(fc sale For now, the 27-year-old nnce Tarver remains patient. 1 just have to keep doing my lob. Tarver, currently Pawtucket's starting right fielder, is one of those "other guys" involved in the eight-man deal, but he hasn't been just any other guy on the field. Before last night's double-header against Columbus, Tarver was leading the IL in hitting with a .358 average.

The jury on the trade should be out for a little while longer. Tarver makes no bones about his position in the whole affair. "I'm a nobody," he says frankly. "I have to build a name. I don't feel any pressure, because in my eyes I was just kind of a throw-in, the fourth guy.

Everybody's always heard about the other three guys." It is this guy, however, who has done the damage. Gardner, Schiraldi and outfielder John Christen-sen (currently on the disabled list) have hogged what little limelight reaches McCoy Stadium, but it is because of this guy that PawSox manager Ed Nottle says, "I hate to think where we would be without him." The weird thing about Tarver's relative anonymity is that this is not his first trip near the top of speed seem to score more irequent lv." Globe photoMerry Farnum LaSchelle Tarver might have been a throw-in in the trade between the Red Sox and the Mets, but he's out to build a name for himself. He has hit in 16 of his last 17 games, going 31 for 70 (.443) over that stretch. He also paces the club with 12 stolen bases, despite being out the first three weeks of the year with a groin pull. Whatever his contributions to the team right now, Tarver was surprised to hear last November he would be coming to Boston. "I figured, 'What does Boston need with a guy who can run? They always want guys with power who can really drive the But I realized that I needed the change after five years with the Mets." There was indeed little more Tarver could have done to impress the New Yorkers. In addition to his performance at bat, he stole 71 bases and committed only five errors over the last two years.

Given his record, Tarver was miffed to hear of criticism he received upon leaving Tidewater. "A friend of mine read an article in a New York paper which said that the batting standings. He linished i second in the league in 1984 at .326 and third last year at .311. Furthermore, he can do some-! thing that few in Fenway have ever been able to do: steal bases. So where has this guy been all of the Red Sox' life? The problem is that there is a flip side to all of those right-place- at-the-right-tlme success stories.

4 Tarver has spent his career with organizations knee-deep in outfielders, either young and talented or established and talented. "I'd like to see some club pick him up. and I'd like it to be Boston," says Nottle.
