18 THE BOSTON GLOBE TUESDAY, NOVEMBER 20, 1984 Ex-basketball coach fails One more headache for N. Shore commuters ing bus shuttles around the Bev-erly-Salem trestle bridge, which burned Friday, was routine to those used to leapfrogging since a fire last January destroyed piers on the Charles River that carried tracks across two drawbridges into Boston's North Station. "There were no serious delays beyond the 15 minutes we suggested riders give themselves to make up the time spent shifting from buses to trains," said James F. O'Leary, general manager of the MBTA, which operates the commuter rail systems serving Boston. About half the commuters BRIDGE Continued from Page 15 trains were switched around the wreck on a siding and the outbound track, but that held up all operations.

It was not known last night how many passengers were on the train that hit the truck. Neither the train nor the truck was seriously damaged, Cohen said. At 6:10 p.m., the inbound train was cleared, and it continued into Boston. But as the cement truck was being towed away, it was stalled across the outbound track. It was finally removed at 6: 1 5.

The morning commute, includ Depot to Thorndike street in Salem, where the trains pick up again. The Beverly-Salem bridge over the Danvers River was an open-deck, 805-foot wooden trestle built In 1886. The fire "was caused by an arc from an electrical switch," Joseph F. Sullivan, Salem's deputy fire chief, said yesterday. "We have three witnesses to that effect." It will take about a year and cost about $10 million to rebuild, O'Leary said.

He said the MBTA Is appealing to the federal Urban Mass Transportation Administration for 80 percent of the money to rebuild the bridge. Normally, railroad bridges are not insured. In December 1983, however, the MBTA brought in-, surance on 34 of its 182 bridges from the Birmingham Casualty Co. One month later, when fire destroyed the piers near North Station, Birmingham canceled the entire policy. The North Station reconstruction is expected to be finished by next April.

There are seven other wooden railroad bridges In the MBTA system and "all of them, to one degree or another, are susceptible to fire." an MBTA official who asked not to be identified said yesterday. All of those bridges are on North Shore lines, In Everett, Chelsea. Revere, Saugus, Ipswich, Haverhill and Gloucester. Medford job against the recommendation of athletic director John Regan, the School Committee voted not to reappoint Torres. Instead, it appointed O'Brien, the former assistant basketball coach.

Before the vote, Medford Mayor Paul Donato. also the School Committee chairman, said he and three other committee members voted for O'Brien because he has served for a number of years as assistant coach and Donato believes "that 1 have to attempt to try to elevate these people who are working within the system." Donato later said that O'Brien had a tremendous amount of support from members of the basketball team. One unidentified coach read a letter in which he stated, "One can only assume the School Committee decision was based on one or both of the following reasons: 1, political patronange; 2. racial discrimination." He said 157 school administrators and teachers' had signed the letter. Armand Caravlello.

chairman of the Medford Human Rights Commission, told the School Committee the organization will investigate Torres' dismissal and will review the overall hiring practices of the school district relating to an affirmative action policy. skipped the train yesterday, O'Leary said. That was offset by an extra 1000 riders on the Blue Line from Wonderland station in Revere and an extra 250 on the Orange Line from Wellington station In Medford, O'Leary said. Traffic north of Boston yesterday morning and evening was no worse than usual, according to Metropolitan Police. There were some complaints yesterday from Salem residents' about bus noise through their neighborhoods, O'Leary said, "but we will be meeting with local officials today to discuses that and any other problems." The basic train-to-bus-to-train shuttle will continue today but with some changes, O'Leary said: There Is a temporary Sa'em station on North street, built since Saturday night, and buses from Ipswich will end there for passengers to pick up the train.

The station has 200 free parking spaces. A new express bus service will run from North Beverly, Salem and Swampscott to Wonderland station on the Blue Line, replacing the weekend extra service to Haymarket. In addition, 87 extra parking spaces have been opened at Suffolk Downs on the Blue Line. Shuttle train service between Cape Ann communities and Beverly Depot will continue. Shuttle buses will operate from Beverly SKI NEW HAMPSHIRE to win back By Carol Pearson Globe Staff The Medford School Committee last night refused to reinstate a former high school basketball coach, despite a spirited appeal by teachers, coaches and parents.

Angel Torres. 38. the former head basketball coach, said after the 4-3 vote he was "disappointed, very disappointed" by the committee's action. "They didn't listen to reason." he said. Torres, who contends he lost the post because he is black, said he will proceed with a complaint filed with the Massachusetts Commission Against Discrimination (MCAD).

The MCAD Is scheduled to meet tomorrow with the School Committee, Meanwhile, the Massachusetts Teachers Assn. is expected to seek a restraining order In Middlesex Superior Court to stop the appointment of John O'Brien to the head coach position, according to Robert Carbone, president of the Medford Teachers Assn. At last night's meeting, Car-bone presented the School Committee with a grievance asking that Torres be reinstated.
