Low brake pedal. By Ernie Roberts Special to the Globe HANOVER. N.H. Jarrin' Ja mie Potkul, a 170-pound tailback, i and his bouncy Brown defensive unit combined for a 22-0 shutout of Dartmouth here yesterday. The quick-footed Potku! slipped through and around the Green for 158 yards, including a 43-yard scamper during Brown's game-opening and game-deciding 78-yard scoring march.

Establishing Brown rushing records for a season (817 yards and career (1961 yards), the New Jersey senior carried the ball 34 I times but seemed barely winded in the bracing, 31 -degree New Hampshire air. Potkul's sub, sophomore Jamie Slmone, scored Brown's other TD, 1 also on a short plunge, in the last quarter. Bruin placekicker Alex Kos, who usually Is kept in reserve because of record-threatening Chris Ingerslev, kicked field goals of 20, 37 and 31 yards. Since Kos also missed attempts of 22 and 43 yards, it was obvious that Ingerslev, just one away from Brown season and career marks, could have enjoyed a productive day. But it also was obvious that coach John Rosenberg was peeved on the Brown 42.

A delay penalty, a 13-yard quarterback sack by Jeff Garrison and Bill Perry, and a high center snap put Brown in possession at the Dartmouth 11 for a 43-yard negative swing. "Brown's defense was the key. Big and strong, they were tough against our run and hurried Dave on the said Dartmouth coach Joe Yukica, suffering only his seventh November defeat and second in Hanover in his eight years here. Because of Steve Kettelberger's injury, former defensive back and wide receiver Keiron Bigby was a surprise starter at quarterback for Brown. He played adequately (3 for 10 passing for 54 yards and another 26 running) but suffered a concussion just before halftime.

But with Potkul at tailback, it didn't matter who played quarterback. On third and 1 at his 36 in the opening series, he broke over left guard all the way to the Dartmouth 22 to set up his own scoring plunge. "I was just looking for the first down on a little dive play, but (fullback Brian) Heffernan made a great block on the linebacker and I broke it," he said. "I'm thrilled because that's the longest of my college history." Dave Gabianelli. 10 23 129 0 Bigby, 3 10 54 -0 Receiving No.

Over 20,000 miles since your last brake check-up. that Ingerslev arrived midway in the first period due to the breakdown of the Brown soccer bus. Ingerslev never entered the game. This was the third shutout of the season for Brown, a defensive mark last achieved by captain Joe Paterno's 1949 team: Dartmouth never penetrated the Brown 29-yard line as quarterback Dave Gabianelli lost 40 yards in sacks. Typical of the Green misior-tunes was the second period se-auence that started at third and 3 Free brake inspection.

John Tagliaferrl gained 1 14 yards on 28 carries and scored on three 1-yard touchdown plunges yesterday, leading Cornell to a 21-8 Ivy League victory over Columbia, which lost it 20th straight. Tagliaferri's performance was the difference in a game dominated by the run due to poor field conditions. The contest was played in a heavy rain, while temperatures hovered just above freezing. Columbia scored early in the first quarter after Chris Riga recovered a fumbled Cornell lateral.
