Mitch Podufaly gathered in a 7-yard touchdown pass from Ed Pandy to carry Central Connecticut State to By Bob Monahan Globe Staff Colgate rallied for three touchdowns in the fourth quarter yesterday to defeat Boston University. 48-37, before 2,485 chilled spectators at Nickerson Field.

Colgate didn't win this won as much as BU lost it. The last two Red Raider touchdowns came after BU fumbles. BU was leading, 37-27. after three quarters. Then the snake bit the Terriers in the fourth quarter after they failed to take advantage of a 61 -yard Calvin Hall interception that moved the ball to the Colgate 16.

Colgate got a life when Tom Burgess hit All-America receiver Tom Stenglein with a 4-yard scoring pass at 7:35. BU took the kickoff and fumbled on the first play from scrimmageQuarterback Jim Schuman turned to hand off, but there was a clash of two BU bodies. The result was a fumble that was recovered by Colgate's Bill Hecht on the Terrier 15. Four plays later, Gary Dolhon scored from the 1 to give Colgate a 41-37 lead with 5:05 remaining. Colgate kicked off again, and BU coughed up the ball again when Tim Bonnell's fumble was recovered by the Red Raiders' Scott Montross at the BU 19.

This led to another Colgate score, as Burgess went in from the 1 on a sneak. Burgess completed 24 of 39 passes for 346 yards and three touchdowns, and rushed 14 times for 40 yards and one touchdown. Almost lost in the defeat was a tremendous effort by BU receiver Bill Brooks, who caught 10 passes for 236 yards and four touchdowns. The four TD catches was a BU record for a receiver. "Brooks played a great game," said Colgate coach Fred Dunlap.

"Fie was better in person than he showed in the films we saw." "The way the game ended was typical of our (3-8) season," said BU coach Steve Stetson. "But you have to admit Brooks was outstanding." The scoring parade began at 5:29 of the first period when Brooks gathered in a 20-yard pass from Schuman, capping a four-play, 65-yard drive. Colgate tied it at 12:03 when Buddy Brown caught an li-ysrd scoring pass from Burgess in the left corner of the end zone. BU took charge again when Mark Seals took the kickoff on his 1 1 and scampered 89 yards -down the right sideline behind some excellent blocking for a 14-7 lead. Colgate scored again at 14:27 when Kenny Gamble went over from the 1 to climax a six-play.

67-yard drive. Burgess made two very big plays in that drive. He picked 'up 13 vital yards on a keeper and then tossed a 45-yard pass to Stenglein to the BU 3. But Mike Powers' extra point try hit the post, leaving BU in front, 14-13. Colgate's Barry Chubb gave his club the YANKEE CONF.

Colgate's lead didn't hold 4ip for long, because Brooks and Schuman hooked up on a 75-yard scoring play at 7:59. Brooks made a superb catch at the 50 and away he went to put BU in front, 21 59. In the first half. Burgess completed 1 1 of 16 for 279 yards and Schuman was good on 12 of 15 for 277 yards. BU went up, 28-19, 3:25 into he second half when Brooks took a 10-yard lob from Schuman -In the right corner of the end zone.

BU got a big play from its defense at 10:04 of the third quarter. Colgate, bogged down at its 8, was forced to punt. Kicker Don Char-ney was pressured by the BU defenders and his punt banged off the shoulder of one of his blockers and the ball rolled out of the end zone for a safety. That made it 30-19, BU. A Wide open play continued, and at 12:10 Stengein scored on pass fronh Burgess, but countered at when Brooks scored on a 55-yard pass from Schuman.
