O'Leary, MBTA general manager, speaks at yesterday's opening of a $72-million Harvard 6-Stirllag at 9 Square station. GLOBE STAFF PHOTO BY JANET KNOTT I t-lm tknti .25 Ct 111! D-Stirtln it 189 872-million project is nearly completed By Douglas S. Crocket and Paul Hirshson Globe Staff There was little room for modesty yesterday in Harvard Square as Gary Balbonl surveyed the sparkling new MBTA station he and his men had built: "I think it's wonderful.

It's clean, bright and safe. All those long days and nights of working and worrying -it's all been worth it." Balboni is construction superintendent for Perini which built, the new Red Line station, and, after nearly seven years of hard work. dust, digging and disruption, his elation was understandable. -City, state, and federal officials, along with construction workers, engineers, architects and Harvard Square merchants and businessmen, gathered on the warm, sunny afternoon to dedicate the $72 million station. "With this long-awaited event, Harvard Square once again becomes a focal point for commerce, transportation and the community," said MBTA General Manager James F.

O'Leary. "We set out to create a completely modern facility that includes special needs access, preserves the historical integrity of the area and provides convenient access to transit," he said. "The results speak for themselves." Underground busway The station, finished in shiny buff and red tiles, includes escalators serving two levels, a mezzanine decorated with artistic tiles, an elevator and an underground busway that will eventually give passengers of buses and trackless trolleys easy access to the Red Line. The busway and another entrance on Brattle street are still under construction and will not be opened until fall. Until then, 6'Leary said, passengers of street vehicles will continue to board and debark at Cambridge Common.

The elevatbr; located in the center of Harvard Square adjacent to the kiosk, runs between the street and both inbound and OUt- gjg Starting it 189 E-Rnri llwari .53 J690 B-Stirtln at $89 yards of material were excavated at Flagstaff Park alone. Rock for a new park Soil and rock excavated from the tunnel will be used in part to build a 51 -acre park on the site of the old Cambridge City Dump. Excavated fill will also be used to restore Magnolia Park in Arlington and Russell Field in North Cambridge, O'Leary said, O'Leary thanked Cambridge officials, residents and merchants for bearing with six years of construction in the area. "I know it has not been easy, living with cranes and pile drivers and reduced access into Harvard Square," O'Leary said. "I am confident, however, that one look at the new station will convince everyone that the sacrifices have produced a state-of-the-art facility and one which will be a major asset to the continued growth and vitality of Harvard Square." bound platforms on two different levels.

The elevator is designed especially for riders with special needs, but will be open to all passengers, O'Leary said. The station dedicated yesterday is actually "the other half of the Harvard Red Line stop. Part of the station has been open and in use for more than a year. When all the work is complete, there will be three entrances to the station in different parts of Harvard Square. The old station, completed in 1912, has been replaced, but many nostalgic amenities, including the newstand kiosk and origi-, nal signs, remain.

New paving, trees, plants Harvard Square itself, after six years of being torn up. now has wider sidewalks, new brick paving and a number of new trees and other plants. Flagstaff Park, about two blocks north of the kiosk, which was excavated to build subterranean passageways into the station, will be finished and upgraded later this year, O'Leary said. Some scaffolding will remain up and limited construction activity will continue in the mezzanine area of the new station for at least a month, O'Leary said. A plywood and canvas wall will block access into the busway until it is completed.

Cambridge Mayor Leonard J. Russell said yesterday he was pleased with the station: "I am also happy the years of disruption due to construction are coming to an end and look forward to increased benefits to commuters, shoppers and business people," he said. The entire Red Line extension will include three stops: Porter Square (Cambridge); Davis Square (Somerville) and Alewife; on the Cambridge-Arlington-Belmont line. Porter and Davis stations opened last year; Alewife is expected to open next month. Since the project began in 1978, the old kiosk roof has been removed and returned, two temporary stations were built at HarvardBrattle and HarvardHo-lyoke, and thousands of tons of soil and rock have been hauled away.
