70; recorded more than 250 songs Associated Press NASHVILLE, Tenn. Ernest Tubb, the pioneer of country music's Tonk" sound with songs like "I'm Walking the Floor Over You," died yesterday. He was 70. Gil Caywood, spokesman at Baptist Hospital, said Mr. Tubb died at 11 a.m.

with his son, Justin, a Grand Ole Opry star like his father, at his bedside. Mr. Tubb, who had been hospitalized since Aug. 10, suffered from emphysema and had been in failing health since 1981. Mr.

Tubb in 1965 was the sixth member elected to the Country Music Hall of Fame. Known as Texas Troubador," he first sang on the Grand Ole Opry in 1942 and his distinctive, deep baritone was heard on the popular country music show throughout his career. He sold at least 30 million records and recorded more than 250 songs. His hits, besides the millionselling "I'm Walking the Floor Over You" in 1942, included "Waltz Across Texas." "Let's Turn Back the "Rainbow at Midnight," "Tomorrow Never Comes," "Filipino Baby" and "Little Ole Band of Gold." Mr. Tubb also was a successful songwriter and operated three Nashville record shops that did a thriving mail-order business.

He helped Loretta Lynn in the early part of her career and in 1964 they recorded a duet, "Mr. H.B. Zachry, 82 Ran construction company Associated Press SAN ANTONIO, Texas H.B. "Pat" Zachry, whose construction company spanned the globe building dams, roads and nuclear power plants, died Wednesday of a stroke. He was 82.

Mr. Zachry graduated from Texas University in 1922 with a bachelor's degree in civil engineering, and founded his Laredo firm, H.B. Zachry two years later. His business interests included oil and gas, gravel and sand production, cement manufacturing, modular construction, ranching, hotels and real estate development. His company constructed part of the Alaskan pipeline, built roads in Peru and Chile, erected dams in the United States and Canada, and created modular housing for peacekeeping troops in the Sinai.

Mr. Zachry donated millions of dollars to Texas and more than 1000 students have received scholarship money provided by Zachry, said Robert Walker, the university's vice president for development. "At one time, there were over 350 students attending Texas through Mr. Zachry's support," Walker said. Survivors include his wife, Polly: two sons and three daughters.

Bessie Jones, a singer of ethnic black songs who was recognized in 1982 as one of the nation's leading folk artists, has died at the age of 82. Mrs. Jones, who died Tuesday. began performing professionally in 1955, singing music originated by slaves on the Georgia sea islands.

In 1982, she was one of 15 master folk artists awarded a National Heritage Fellowship from the National Endowment for the Arts during the Festival of American Folklife in Washington. Mrs. Jones was working at a camp in the Catskill Mountains in 1956 when she came to the attention of folk singer Pete Seeger. One night as she was singing to the campers, Seeger showed up and listened. Mrs.

Jones said he beckoned her to when she finished and asked, "Would you sing at Carnegie Hall if I could get you in?" "I said, without knowing what I was talking Mrs. Jones said in an interview two years ago.
