Funeral plans were incomplete'. Langer steered a safe course through many a political whirlwind. In 1934 he easily won nomination for re-election as governor of North Dakota even though he was under federal indictment for conspiracy. He eventually was" acquitted. Only last year he won reelection without making a single campaign speech in spite of his own state Republican organization.

In the Senate Langer voted against the Eisenhower administration more often than with it. He opposed Eisenhower's foreign policy. Anything proposed by of Agriculture Benson was almost sure to bring Langer's implacable opposition. Langer was an. orator of the old school, who emphasized his words with windmill gestures and much banging on the desk.

His trademark was a cigar forever clamped in bis mouth. He never lit one. Typical of Langer's lonely political -stands was one of his last Senate votes. He and Sen. Wayne Morse were the only senators to vote against the labor je- form bill at the last session! Another key party vote was on the confirmation of Lewis Strauss as Secretary of Commerce earlier in the year.

Two i a voted against Strauss--Langer and Sen. Margaret Chase Smith of'Maine. Strauss' confirmation was defeated 49-46. Langer was the fourth member of Congress to die within a week. The others were House Members.
