The pitstop by Ruthford on lap 179 and his stalling as he came out of the pit sent many of the crowd of 100,000 towards the exits, knowing that barring a mechanical failure, Unser would waltz home the winner. Unser, the pole-sitter, had to carry the honor of the Penske Horton Disabled SEATTLE (UPI) The Seattle Mariners have placed designated hitter Willie Horton, who has been suffering from sore hands, on the 21-day disabled list. Rutherford leads, it was Unser all the way once he assumed command on the 83rd lap when A.J. Foyt went out with a broken valve after leading 71 of the first 82 laps.

Rutherford held command in the 136th lap when Unser pitted for fuel and tires and again after a yellow light closed traffic on the 159th lap. Unser, not particularly pleased with his treeatment by Pocono track security personnel who he claimed harrassed him by continuously asking him for identification, was anxious to make this race a Penske victory. The track's chief executive officer, Joe Mattioli, has a $6.2 million suit against several CART owners, inccluding Penske, for their boycott of last year's Pocono 500. Tom Sneva, second to Rutherford at Indy, was third in Sunday's race, two laps CITIZENS' VOICE, team because two of his stablemates were plagued by mechanical problems. Bill Alsup was fourth and Australian Vera Schuppan was fifth, both four laps back. Unser averaged 151.459 miles per hour in a race that took three hours and 18 minutes to complete, earning about $9,000 for his victory. Rutherford tried to make the most on an opportunity to erase unser's 12-second lead when a yellow caution light flashed on the 154th lap after Pancho Carter spun out.

Only Carter's brilliant handling of his car as he twisted close to the infield prevented a possible mass pileup. there were three accidents during the race but no injuries to drivers. Electing to take the middle groove on curves to make Unser go high or low, Rutherford grabbed the lead on the 163th lap green and Sunday. Hap Mattern, with Peg Mattern crew, made a skillful tack around the last mark to slip into second place just seconds ahead of Frank Wadas, with Dave Hoffman crew, placing JT 44 (Continued from pagel) back to 1958 and a three-time winner at Pocono, would be the surprise rabbit in the field. A 14th-place finisher at Indy this year, the feisty Texan let out all the stops for the first 200 miles with that artful wheel handling that makes him a perenniel champion, but unfortunately the broken valve ruined his chances.
