10 Oanrwl MouttOfl V. Tl) Don She best, of the many athletes-fSirned-actors, rates Simpson a "cut below" Jim Brown and Fred Williamson. 'He's a dreadful actor," Deeb says. "He'll have temble withdrawal pangs if he truly believes he can be decent. A lot of actors and producers and directors like to be around big jocks.

Right now he has a lot of high-powered showbiz talent agents telling him how good he is. But when he's through plaving, that appeal will wear Simpson, ho can be seen in all the right places with the right believes his friendships will last. His radiance, humanity and quick-wittedness have allowed him to blend in naturally in either Beverly Hills or Watts. He's able to make you feel you are his best friend especially if you're from a newspaper or magazine. "Public relations is a very vital side of success," he says.

"And I've always been good at it." Chuckle. Wink. son. Ken Norton have made killings on. Simpson, a proud man, has had virtuoso success on the field, he wants nothing less on the stage.

Simpson's head isn't turned by the superlatives he attracts, but he is concerned about having a thin sxin. Criticism goes straight to his heart. "I'm prone to worry about what a writer says." Simpson says. "In football I don't care. I don't have to wait until Monday to read the reviews I know how it happened As Brown did, Simpson wants to quit football while fans remember "the Juice Simpson at his best But all Simpson will say about the acting ground Brown broke is that "-watching the whole Jim Brown experience has been positive for me." When asked if he figures Simpson will endure as an actor, Brown says.

"I'm reserving all comment until later." Gary Deeb. the Chicage Tribune TV critic, who calls Stand Seen Premature WASHINGTON AP) Sen. Gary Hart, who managed Sen. George McGovern's 1972 presidential campaign, said Sunday he does not agree with McGovern's criticism, of President Carter. "The jury is still out on the Carter administration in terms oi its i mag i na i art- and-creativity." said the Colorado Democrat "The real test will come next year as he sorts but his own budget." McGovern has criticized Carter's economic and social priorities, sav ing they favor big business and resemble Republican approaches.

And he knows he has the one quality you ca nt teach "Charisma," he says, "is a funny thing.

Like playing football, it's a natural gift. I mean, some people say Farrah Fawcett can't act, but there's something about the lady you want to see. It's more than just sex appeal. It 's just a feeling There's just one thing J. i mpson wi shes he weren O.J Simpson When he retires from football, he plans to become an All-Pro hermit "The biggest thing I have to conquer is being me," he says.

"So I've got it all planned: In January of 1979 I'm going to disappear (except fordoing the Hertz commercials, which run through 1980). Right now, I still have a problem of being O.J. It takes people a third of the movie before, bingo, they see It's easier for guys like Brando. You never see him as himself So Simpson battles the very trait most critics enjoy himself. Off camera, he's always "on" hyper, witty, extroverted.

On camera, he strives for self-restraint. "Oh, I'm good when I'm mad," he says. "That's easy to do, But sometimes I overact. Sometimes when you have a strong presence, it's more effective to play it soft. That's when I'm 'right That's when I'm cookin' like I am in the fourth quarter." Though he carefully eludes questions on the subject, Simpson seems to look with disdain upon the black exploitation flicks other athletes Jim Brown, Fred William- Put al sizzle into yoHi? 1I nav.

0ft O.J. BLRBANK. Calif. The muscles In Simpson's face are making more moves than tus feet on the football field. Eyes widen.

Eyebrows rise. Teeth clench. Cheeks scrunch in anger He springs from his chair and confronts his boss, the police lieutenant seated at the desk. The camera moves quickly to follow its star The director leans forward. Simpson, eves wild with rage, Ls nose-to-nose with his antagonist Simpson stares.

And stares. Then slowly his countenance melts into embarrassment. He breaks the awkward tension with his familiar rapid-fire laugh, and the 30 or so people on the set can't help laughing with him. "Man, 1 was so busy getting mad," Simpson says with an enormous gnn, "that 1 forgot to say my line." The Buffalo Bills superstar is an off season actor, not that he needs the exposure. Whether TV viewers see him dashing through airports, sipping orange juice or carrying footballs, he's coastantly on display flashing the old charisma.

ibiiLi mpson plans to retire from football after two more seasons, and he aims to be a full-time, full fledged actor not Just a grinning, winning piece of set din-oration. "I don't Just want to play O.J.," Simpson says as he walks back to his trailer outside Stage 22a at Burbank Studios. "1 don't just want to play the six. -million-dollar super hero; I could get a ton of scripts playing myself. But I want to be a good actor.

I do have a little talent, and just like I've done in football. I'm going to work hard and plav to the best of mv There's no doubt that O.J. is OK playing O.J the warm, animated young man who helps defensive tackles up after faking them off their feet. But 10 seasons from now, audiences -may begin to forget about the seasons and 200-yard games. Then, some critics ask, can-Simpson win any awards or pay any bills playing, say, a villain or a coward? Simpson winks "Hey, I know there's something in he says, -pointing to -his- 42-lnch chest, Just let me hone that, then we'll see how i compare to the best," As he moves, he attracts attention like a 205-pound magnet.

A hand-slap here, an autograph there, a smile for all. In the trailer with the "O.J." sign near the door, the star is going over his lines. "It was a righteous shooting," he says, then shakes his head, "No righteous shooting," he repeats, straining for a pained expression. Simpson isn't above practicing or asking the most obvious of questions. He's currently playing his first lead role, a detective in a two-hour TV movie called "DHQ" (detective headquarters).

His costar is Elizabeth Montgomery' of "Bewitched" fame. Simpson, though, isn't exactly a bundle of nerves. He snaps his notebook shut and turns on his disarming grin. "They call me one-take Simpson," he says with a wink. He Isn't kidding.

He has carefully paced his screen development, passing up larger low-budget parts for aimed roles with better actors and directors. He has had minor parts as a security officer in "The Towering Inferno," a Southern black in "The Klan-sman," a soldier of fortune in "Killer Force," a priest in "The Cassandra Crossing," an astronaut in the yet-to-be-released "Capricorn and an TWIN DOLPHINS CINEMA PORTIAVACA 552-6764 MARLO CHARLES ITEOMAS GRODLN "THEES Dl 7:00 1 100 -11. k9 Chopped Stockade Steak!
