i i 1 "i i i i i i i ii hi i i. THE BOSTON GLOBE" SATURDAY. JANUARY 15. 1983 23 lJEA3GE2 Henson has more plans for Muppets L-M-: 1 i if By Robert A. McLean Globe Staff Jim Henson opted for tea, lemon 'n' sugar, during an interview in The Globe cafeteria, although he admitted he has learned to enjoy drinking coffee, the beverage with which his Muppets were christened.

The Muppets got their start as characters on a set of TV commercials for a Washington, D.C., coffee company back in the early 1950s. The principal character didn't drink coffee and was punished for his sin of omission by being blown up, shot "and other awful fates," Henson recalled. "It was the Wilkins Coffee commercials, and they were very successful," he said. "Like the main character, I was not a coffee-drinker at the time. But now I love it," he said, twirling his teaspoon.

Despite this seeming contradiction, Henson displayed some knowledge of local coffee brands, asking if La Touraine was still on the shelves in Boston. Ara-ban, however, was a name that didn't register, as was Chock Full O' Nuts. And, in fairness to Henson, he Inadvertently was offered a choice at the start of the interview tea, take it or leave it by this Tab-drinking writer, and probably was too polite to argue. Henson was in town to help promote this week's premiere of his new "Frag-gle Rock" on cable TV's Home Box Of- movies. Henson said, and at least one more big TV special "John Denver and The Muppets: A Rocky Mountain Holiday." on ABC sometime In late spring.

But no more "Muppet Show' segments as such will be produced because "we had a good run with "that format, and now we have moved on to other ideas and concepts." Henson said. "The Muppet Show," In syndicated production for five years, was shut down three years ago and "probably never will be started up again." Why were the Muppets always syndicated rather than produced for network TV? And why cable TV for "Fraggle Rock?" And why was neither produced in the United States? 'The Muppet Show' was syndicated from the start It was produced in England. The CBS network's owned-and-operated stations, however, were the first to purchase the syndication rights In America." "We never could find a logical place on network TV for 'Fraggle It is produced in Toronto, partly because of our long association with the Canadian Broadcasting Corp, (CBC). And Toronto is only an hour away from New York, and there is a wealth of local talent up there to go along with our own crew -many of whom have been together for years." a -JfSkJ. JIM HENSON fice the first regular weekly series on HBO which began a 36-week run on national cable and the 50-plus systems serving the Boston area. Naturally, much of the talk was about the Frag-gles and Doozers and Gorgs those delightful new Henson creations that inhabit caves around Fraggle Rock. There was talk, too, of his first serious movie, "The Dark Crystal," which is being screened here and elsewhere, to mixed reviews, but mostly favorable.
