of Readville. remembers when chauffeurs used to bring passengers to the Wolcott street train station in horse-drawn buggies. And when the Readville race track was in operation, special trains used to carry the horses past the old brick depot. "It used to be a very busy place." Phillips said yesterday of the former depot of the New Haven Railroad and. later, of Amtrak.

A Stop Shop warehouse now stands on the nearby site of the former Readville race track, and the only people at the depot yesterday were a few firefighters and telephone company employees working to clear the charred remains of the station. A four-alarm blaze that began about 2 a.m. yesterday gutted the vacant station located in Readville. the southernmost part of Boston. Fire officials estimated that the blaze caused $200,000 damage.

The cause is suspicious and is under investigation, they said. The depot on the line from Boston to New York and Washington, now owned by the MBTA, had been vacant for more than 10 years, residents said. Fire officials said the MBTA had been planning to demolish the building, which -vas a frequent target of vandalism. Yesterday, the only part of the building that appeared untouched by the fire was a white Amtrak sign on one wall which read. "Working to serve your needs." Fire officials and New England Telephone Company employees worked to clear piles of wire, glass, brick and shattered slate from the roof, which collapsed during the fire.

"It was a very old building. It was a historic thing." said one phone company employee. An 81 -year-old Readville resident, whose father-in-law was a station master at the depot and who did not want her name used, said she remembered the station's heyday. Built near the turn of the century, the depot soon became a stop for 125 trains a day, she said. "We paid $2.25 for a 25-ride ticket to Boston and got two weeks' travel out of it," she recalled.

Persons who worked in the Blue Hills section of Milton, the affluent from Readville and nearby Milton, and pleasure-seekers headed for the race track gave the station heavy use, Phillips said. "This was a very busy town." "But once the automobile came, trains didn't have the patronage they used to," the elderly resident said. Use of the station declined, and the building fell into disrepair. The broken, blackened walls of the depot were visible yesterday from the Readville fire station around the corner on Neponset Valley parkway. Although the station had been boarded up, "kids kept on breaking in and there was a lot of vandalism," Lt.

Paul Walsh said. "If that fire hadn't happened," he said, "it might have been standing for years. But they'll have to knock it down now."
