BEYXIW I PZI0T0C2APIIY By Kelly Wise Special to The Globe Not all photographic exhibitions offer imagery of Immediate human interest Of the four such in Boston at the moment, three are engaging successes. The portraits of Jamie Cope (Boston Public Library; 536-5400; to May 27) seek a gentle flattery without surprise or edge. Her subjects, elder Bostonians of achievement, eschew tennis shorts and Jeans, casual sports clothing, and vulnerable or abrasive expressions. She puts them at generous ease and coaxes from them a wholesome congeniality. The viewer may find these formal portraits lacking in snap and ginger, but many are well-conceived and most are graced I by the subtle modeling of natural It is the range and vibrancy expression evoked in her subjects that at times seems disappointing.

Cope is confronting some fertile and voluble egos, yet their personalities emerge through her camera with only slender variation. Happily, however, she has produced a number of voluble portraits: artist Maud Morgan reclining in a wicker chaise, looking genuinely troubled by the ills of the world; former At lantic editor Edward Weeks backed shelves of leAher-bound volumes, smiling austerely, a gleam-' ing watch chain stretched across his dark vest; aviator Ann Wood, robust and undaunted, leaning against the stalled propellor of a small plane; and classicist John H. Finley, striking an erudite and pluckish pose. "You tell me your story first," mother says, holding her daughter's hand. "And then tell you mine." They stand before one of Jerry Berndt's color photographs of an arrangement conceived by his daughter Emma, aged 3'2: a cardboard doll house with 16 miniature dolls aligned on the sidewalk.

In an accompanying picture frame above the photograph Emma writes: "The Babies are waiting for the Mommy to come home." This charming exhibition (the' Children's Museum; 426-6500; to May 23) draws sighs, broad smiles and imaginative tales from its audience. Children and parents will TONITE AT 8PM FATHER'S DAY SPECIAL! This child's Imagination is filled with whimsey. fear, protectiveness, destruction, hazard, devilment and affection.

"Born Early" (Museum of Science; 723-2500; to May 25). photographs by Georgia Litwack, depicts the moving story of Adrienne Weber's carefully monitored fight for life. Adrienne was born 14 weeks early with decidedly underdeveloped digestive, respiratory, nervous and circulatory systems. At birth, the average weight of a baby Is seven pounds: Adrienne weighed just under two pounds and was covered with a downy fetal enjoy it immensely. Oh, them babies, what they endure at the devising of young Emma.

They end up in soapy water in the bathroom sink because, as Emma explains, they are they have to sleep but in the yard under the stars because "a penguin has moved Into the and they line up on the living room coueh for a candy reward, but Emma decides since babies don't have "real mouths." she will eat "their special treat." The world arranged by Emma and photographed by her father, a talented commercial photographer, is ruled by its own logic and justice that any child can understand. Emma's play animals await someone to lead them into the ark, but we are casually informed. "The zebra must go first," and "Bad Bert. 1946-76. by Don Hong Oai (Boston City Hall; 536-1081; to May 22) offers a mixed bag. Oai delights in painterly images of pre conceived design. He likes to com bine multiple negatives to make a single image. Unfortunately, number of his combines are hack neyed: a man in a boat in a moonlit lagoon with wispy boughs of a tree printed In the As can be seen in his Westonesque images of dunes from the Mui Ne region with their inclusions of the human figure, Oai is absorbed in man's In volvement with nature.

The por traits aretiis strong suit, especially one of a child watching an ancient face collapse with a puff of smoke, Here and there, a candid pops up that is also fetching a dark figure in a bamboo hat working among racks of bleached white cloth, and a row of nude bathers, their sandy. plump bottoms up. Overall, this ex hibit falters with its saccharine conception of man In unharried harmony with nature. It suggests once again that City Hall should take greater pains to exhibit qual ity work; somehow several of the photo exhibitions in its spaces this year have smacked of naivete, prancing clowns, and waning sun sets.
