54 BOSTON SUNDAY GLOBE OCTOBER 31. 1982 first arvard D-f eats Brown for a piece 1 week, read a Brown blitz and threw 8 yards over the top to Mark Vignall for the final touchdown. "We've still got a ways to go," said Allard. who has completed 28 of 50 passes the past two Saturdays for 408 yards and four touchdowns. "I don't think there's a team in our league that's comparable to the one I saw today," said Anderson.

"I haven't seen anybody play as well as Murrer. They're just a quality football team, and they're much stronger offensively than 1 thought they were." if Vi' 'NL4 -jTjr i 4 A 'mi I i IW 1 1 rMli IIM'lffli lliliillllllli I III I HI.IM I Jl SJ Harvard. 3M) at Cambridge Brom(3-4) 0 0 0 0-0 Harvard (5-2) 10 314 7- 34 Jim Villanueva 34 FG Mite Granger 6 run (Villanueva kick) Villanueva 44 FG Jim Garvey 22 pass from Don Allard (Villanueva kick) John Brien 12 run (Vikanueva kick) Mark Vignali 8 pass from AHard (Joe Abal kick) Attendance 18.000. So. say hello to Us Flex-a-D defense.

"I can't sum our defense up in one word." said middle guard Scott Murrer. "Our defense Is 14, 15. 16 people. We're well-balanced and we execute. We have a swarming defense rather than one perforated by mistakes." Brown coach John Anderson, for one, is a believer.

"It's hard for me to believe they've lost," he said after watching Harvard deliver a 34-0 knockout punch to the Bruins yesterday in Harvard Stadium. "I can't understand how anybody moved the ball on them. I said going in that this is the best defensive personnel we've seen, and It is." In a carbon copy of last week's 27-15 victory at Princeton when its defense picked off six passes the Crimson intercepted six of Brown quarterback Joe Potter's passes to hang up the Crimson's first shutout since the second game of the 1978 season against UMass, its first in the Ivy League since the 1974 Penn game, and the first against Brown since 1946. It's also the first time Brown's been blanked in 44 games. Just as Harvard filed into Dillon Field House on this warm, hazy afternoon, the news filtered in that Princeton had dealt Penn its first Ivy defeat and Yale had doled out loss No.

2 to Dartmouth to lift the Crimson into a tie for the Ivy lead with Penn. They each have 4-1 league records and will meet in two weeks in Philadelphia. Just think if the Ivy presidents had approved it, they'd be playing for the Ivy championship in Tokyo's Mirage Bowl on Thanksgiving weekend. This was one of Harvard's best team efforts in recent vintage. With Don Allard directing a sophisticated offense completing 11 of 20 passes for 171 yards and two touchdowns and springing John O'Brien for another on a perfectly executed reverse the Crimson had a balance between the run (202 yards) and pass (171).

Brown's deepest penetration before a final thrust to the Crimson 7 was on its initial possession, when the Bruins reached the 22. Field goal time. Mike Rosso, the holder, muffed the snap, tried to run with it and was swarmed under at, the 33. That's the way it was going to be all afternoon, as Potter and his mates kept seeing Crimson. After Jim Villanueva's 34-yard field goal gave Harvard a 3-0 lead, Allard scampered 32 yards to the Brown 20.

"I was -very pleased with the way he took off," said Harvard's Joe Restic. "He's back (after a shoulder bruise) to where he was." Four plays later, fullback Mike Granger followed guard Mike Corbat's block to a 6-yard TD run. Harvard 10, Brown 0. Villanueva's 44-yard field goal lifted the Crimson to a 13-0 halftime edge. Chris Myers started the rout when he stepped in front of an underthrown Potter sideline pass to Paul Farnham and returned it 24 yards to the Brown 37.

On first and 10 from the 22, Allard rolled out, picked up wingback Jim Garvey as he angled across the end zone and led him perfectly for a 22-yard scoring strike: "He's my big-play man," said Allard. Before the third quarter ended, Jeff Howkins recovered an errant Potter pitch and fell on it at the Brown 18. On third and 4 from the 12, Allard sent everybody flowing right, brought O'Brien around and gave it to him. O'Brien swept the left side for the touchdown. Allard, whose absence two weeks ago at.

The Tigers tied the score with a 90-yard drive, capped by Brent Woods' fourth-down, 8-yard toss to Brad Urschel with 6:13 Princeton linebacker Vic Ruterbush sacked Vura on third down of Penn's next series, forcing the Quakers to punt. The Tigers began the winning drive from their own 29-yard line with 4:14 left. Princeton went ahead, 7-0, on its first possession of the first quarter when Woods scored on a 2-yard run. Steve Rubin scored on a 6-yard run in the third quarter to tie the score for Penn.

Poulan engine Front-mounted, super quiet, spark arresting muffler (shoulder) and Rick Stafford (knee) Caraviello responded with three authoritative touchdown drives that obliterated an early 3-0 deficit. The first featured a 35-yard pass to Jack Daly, a 17-yard Caraviello scramble and a 20-yard touchdown roll on a reverse by John Olejnlczak. Two plays after Dave Neslund intercepted a Dufek pass, Caraviello floated a 43-yarder to Daly for a TD and 14-3 lead. And his two vital third-down completions on the next drive covered 35 yards and set up Rich Weissman's 3-yard scoring plunge.

With 8:11 left in the first half, Yale was comatose at 21-3. But a relentless ball-control offense guided by Dufek and Andrie (35 carries for 163 yards) gradually ate away at the Dartmouth defense. And the deficit. Dufek lofted a 6-yard scoring pass on which Crews outreached Dartmouth's Don Pomeroy 40 seconds before halftime. But the Eli were still on the danger list at 21-10, so Cozza blew the dust off his Knute Rockne scrap-book and delivered a halftime oration.

"I told the kids at halftime that I didn't want to hear any complaining or swearing," said Cozza. "I just wanted them to play with their hearts. I really let 'em have it. I hadn't done that all year." "Coach Cozza doesn't cry wolf," said Dufek. "When he get's mad like that, we pay attention." Indeed, the Eli were wide awake in the second half.

The defense dismantled Dartmouth, allowing the Green to venture past midfield only once. Andrie slammed in from 2 yards out with 6:10 left irt the third quarter, completing an 81 -yard, 19-play drive. Dufek missed connections on a 2-point conversion pass, but Yale was back in business at 21-16. Then came the decisive 75-yard march resurrected by the holding call. It was typical of Yale's comeback, because even after after Dufek was buried, the Eli couldn't be interred.

By Duffy Glob-Staff HANOVER. N.H. The drive, the jpmeback and Yale's football tradition apparently had collapsed undet a green wall. A Big Green walljto be precise. fith 8:41 left in yesterday's game and Yale trailing Dartmouth, 21 -l, Eli quarterback Joe Dufek drifted back to pass on a fourth-andll situation from the Green 24.

Be looked for wide receiver Rick who was supposed to be hooding to the inside. Crews was a no show. Qufek saw no alternative receiver, so he tried to bargain for time. But -he ran smaclinto a conven-tionjof Green jerseys, bounced off, and-was pulled down at the 30. Yale's first nonwinning season in 11 years now seemed a guarantee.

'5 saw him going down and I said; 'Oh, said Yale coach Carrn Cozza. was trying to find Rick, but he never got there." said Dufek. "I knew he had been held up." Crews had been held up, alright. Illegally. The call of defensive holding pginst Paul Willis gave Yale a reprieve a fourth-and-1 at the Dartmouth 14.

The Eli gratefully accepted the call from the governor. Paul Andrie toolic a pitchout 2 yards for the life-saving first down, and two plays later. John Neville bolted in from the "-3 for a 22-21 Yale victory in this rematch of defending Ivy League co-champions who have fallen lipon hard times. The TD climaxed a methodical comeback from an 18-point deficit by which apparently went theway of the New Hampshire foliage in the first half, plucked bare by Dartmouth's bombardier offense. Mike Caraviello, a sophomore quarterback and the son of Med-ford High football coach Armond Caraviello, had made his first varsity start something straight from Broadway.
