Gannett executives, headed by president and chairman Allen H. Kennedy Library in Dorchester. No news conference is scheduled, but reports abound that Neuharth has plans to expand the Ch. 56 news operation, most likely in September, in conjunction with the debut in Boston of Gannett's national newspaper. USA Today. Ch.

56 officials declined comment. Gannett, one of the nation's most aggressive publishers and broadcasters, owns America's largest newspaper chain and a rapidly growing broadcasting complex, among its numerous communications operations. Unlike WLVI. which is independent, the other Gannett TV stations are network affiliates most of them NBC outlets each with New England's TV newsmen. Familiar names and faces among the old Ch.

56 crew included Bob Clinkscale. who Just this past week left WCVB-TV and came "available" if any recruitment begins: Barbara Marshall, who went on to WBZ and today is a top news producer in Honolulu; and weatherman Bob Ryan, who moved on to Channel 5 and eventually to the ABC network and "Good Morning America." Despite its success and a rosy ratings future, the WKBG news operation was abruptly shut down in the early 1970s by owner Kaiser Broadcasting, which dropped news at all its US stations at the same time. Field Enterprises, a multimedia communication corporation, did little to restore or expand the station's news operation during the eight years it owned WLVI. Gannett's entry into the Boston TV market sixth-largest In the nation marks the second such incursion into a top-10 American TV marketplace in less than a year. Just nine months ago, the Rochester, N.Y.-based firm acquired KRON-TV In San Francisco for $100 million.

WLVI. one of Boston's three commercial UHF stations, has a strong movie-syndicated reruns In recent years it has seesawed between fifth and sixth places in overall ratings with rival UHF station WSBK-TV Channel 38) behind the network affiliates and ahead of Ch. 25. its own extensive local news department. 56 is no neophyte on the Boston TV news scene and at one time aired a well-watched prime-time newscast, which was a slender rating margin away from being the city's third-rated operation, ahead of Channel 7. That was in the late 1960s and early 1970s, when the station whose call letters were then WKGB-TV launched the first 10 p.m. newscast in Boston. It quickly became popular with viewers who wanted a late-evening update but had to retire before the traditional 11, p.m. newscasts.

AIDS screening plan for jail Suffolk County Sheriff Dennis Kearney is due to announce today plans for an Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome (AIDS) screening program for Charles Street Jail.

Kearney said the screening was planned because AIDS has become a correctional issue as well as a public health issue. The sheriff said that, although there have been no reported cases of AIDS in any Massachusetts correctional facility, the disease is "working its way" through prisons in other states and will sooner or later hit the Commonwealth. Subpoena for records fought ACharlestown accountant yesterday sought to quash a federal grand jury subpoena requiring him to turn over records of clients with accounts at a North End credit union. Nicholas Pino, an accountant for the Ausonian Credit Union, claimed the summons is overly broad. US District Judge Robert E.

Keeton said he will hear additional arguments on the claim Monday. But the judge rejected another claim by Pino's Henry D. Katz, that the records are protected by a constitutional privilege of confidentiality. Katz also sought unsuccessfuly to have the judge bar the public and press from yesterday's hearing.
