Madisonville's first place votes were cut in half to three while the Maroons' point total dropped just five to 45 after their 20-8 victory over Owensboro Catholic.

Both Lafayette and Tilghman picked up two points to 33 to remain tied for second in Class AA after Lafayette bounced Richmond Madison 33-14 and Tilghman put down Owensboro 21-6. Paris, after its 15-14 squeaker over Frankfort, lost two first place votes, getting five this week, and dropped seven points while Madison moved into a stronger second place, replacing Eminence. Madison, which had only one first place vote 22 points last week, this time received four first votes and a total of 31 points, just four short of the Class A leader. Each of the three drew fewer first place votes than last week's first Associated Press poll of the season and each had fewer total points on the basis of five for a first place vote, four for second and so on. At the same time, their pursuers gained strength in both first place votes and point totals. Oddly, there were ties in all three classes Bishop David and Pleasure Ridge Park for fifth in AAA, Lexington Lafayette and Paducah Tilghman for second in AA and Frankfort and Trigg County for fifth in A. A panel of 12 sportswriters and sportscasters from across the state gave Trinity six first place votes one less than last week with St. Xavier getting five and Butler one in Class AAA.

"It's a major blow," said coach Paul Brown Monday.

"We don't even have a week to work with Van Galder before heading into our season opener." Carter has a broken collarbone. Being on the injured reserve list forces him to stay out for the year. Van Galder, 29, was waived by St. Louis last week. "We needed experience," Brown said.

"Our situation is not very encouraging." As a result of the Van Gal-der-Carter moves, rookie Randy Mattingly was waived.
