I'll give it one more try." Guldry got his chance in June of 1977 and over the last half of that season was the Yankees' top pitcher. This year he became the Yankees' "stopper." Caldwell, the Milwaukee Brewers south paw who earlier was named UPI Comeback Player of the Year, rebounded from a 54 record in 1977 to a 22-9 mark and a 2.37 ERA this year. Caldwell's 22 wins were surpassed only by Guidry's 25.

"It's between me and Jim (Rice)," said Guldry.

"One of us la going to win it. Maybe they should give two MVP trophies. He's done something no hitter has done in years and I've done something no pitcher has done in years." Guidry's rise to the top has been dramatic, considering he was all set to give up baseball only two years ago. Wednesday November scores 1 6, but hits game winner By FRED McMANE if UPI Sporti Writer NEW YORK (UPI) Ron Guldry of the York Yankees, the "Louisiana Lightning" who electrified the baseball world by posting the greatest winning percentage in modern baseball history among 20-game winners, today was named the recipient of the American League's Cy Young Award by i unanimous vote.

The 28-year-old left-hander, who posted a 25-3 record with a sterling 1.74 ERA, became only the seventh pitcher In history to receive all the first-place mentions in the voting. The only other unanimous AL selection was 31-game winner Denny McLain in 1968. It marked the second year in a row that a Yankee pitcher has taken the league's most coveted pitching prize. Reliever Sparky Lyle won the award in 1877. Mike Caldwell of the Milwaukee Brewers finished second to Guldry with 25 second-place votes in the balloting of 28 sports writers two from each AL city and Jim Palmer of the Baltimore Orioles, a three-time previous winner, was third.

Guldry was the only pitcher named on every ballot. Rounding out the top votegetters were Dennis Eckersley of the Boston Red Sox, Rich Gossage of the Yankees and Ferguson Jenkins of the Texas Rangers. A skinny 5-foot-U, 160-pounder whose fastball has been clocked at 96 mph, Guldry established a host of majorleague, AL and club records in 1978. Among them were: Highest winning percentage in major league history (.839) for pitchers winning 20 or more games. Most strikeouts in history by a Yankee (248).

In addition, he won his first 13 decisions and ended up leading the AL in victories, JSRA, shutouts and fewest hits allowed per nine innings.

He was second in strikeouts. "I'm surprised that my record was so great, but I wasn't surprised at the way I pitched," said Guldry. "I always thought I could pitch that way. I could have lost 10 or 12 games that I won. to offer the world heavyweight champion his biggest purse yet 86 million plus. All, who beat Leon Spinks Sept. 15 to regain the heavyweight title for an unprecedented third time, has been offered that much to risk his title once again by taking on the new World Boxing Association lightheavyweight champion Mike Rossman. Rossman outpointed Victor Gallndez to win his title the same night Ali regained his in New Orleans. According to Arum, the AliRossman fight will take place mostly likely in Buenos Aires in either February or March of next year and is contingent on Rossman defeating European light-heavyweight champion, Aldo Traversero, In Philadelphia, Dec.

5. "It's very close," confirmed Arum. "However, there are still a lot of details to be worked out If it's going to happen we'll know within the next 10 days. "Both fighters have expressed a willingness to go forward with It and we're trying to work out the money. I'm very optimistic, but no contracts have been signed." Despite the physical disadvantages, the matchup of thee 37-year old All and the 22-year old Rossman is otherwise a natural from a promotional viewpoint especially for a showman of All's stature.

Not only does it pit a black and against a white and age against youth, but It also features a Muslim versus a Jew. Rossman, who fights out of Philadelphia and Is of ItalianJewish parentage, has often billed himself as "the Jewish Bomber." "Originally we had hoped to have the fight in Jersusalem with Ali training in Cairo and Rossman in Tel Aviv," said Arum. "I would have staked my life on Rossman's safety in Israel but protecting Ali from the the PLO in Cairo might have been a little different." At present Arum has his sights set on the huge soccer stadium in Buenos Aires, which housed the World Cup soccer finals earlier this year. "We are discussing that with people In Argentina," said Arum. "It's a conducive place and Argentina has a number of champions who can appear in other bouts." Meanwhile, in taking on Rossman, Ali will thus pass up a chance to clarlify the heavyweight picture where half the crown Is being worn by Larry Holmes, the World Boxing Council champion.

Rossman shared All's training quarter at Deer Lake, Pa. prior to the Sept 18 fights and 1 the two are known to be friends. "We keep people moving on our offensive attack and that helps open things up for me," said Davis, who had 11 of Indiana's final 16 points. With the Cavaliers making a fourth-quarter charge at the Pacers, Davis helped steady Indiana.

After Cleveland cut Indiana's lead to 101-99 with 6:16 left, James Edwards made a 10-footer and Davis hit two foul shots in the next minute to put a lock on the game. Alex English added 21 for Indiana, and Campy Russell and Jim Chones had 18 each for the Cavs, losers of four straight. (UPI) No one expected to see Kevin Grevey of the Washington Bullets and the Atlanta Hawks' Jack Givens to wage an all-out battle against each other when their two teams met Tuesday night.

But it did promise to be an interesting contest, this first regular-season NBA meeting of the two former University of Kentucky All-America's. Grevey, a fourth-year pro, won the battle, hitting eight of 11 shots from the floor to outscore Givens 16-9. But the Hawks' rookie had the last laugh, hitting a 14-foot jump shot with 11 seconds left to give the Atlanta a 110-108 win over the defending NBA champions. The win was Atlanta's first on the road this season, and also broke a 14-game losing streak in Capital Centre. The Hawks hadn't won here since Dec.

1, 1973. It was also a boost for Givens', who has had to prove he can play the "short forward" in coach Hubie Brown's offense. "I'm showing I can play here," said Givens afterwards. "I'm pretty pleased with the way I'm coming along. But I'm a rookie, and I think after one time around the league, I'll be playing much better." Givens entered the game with a 10 point average, and ranked fifth in the lague in free-throw percentage.

His biggest problem now, he says, is defense. "Defensively, I'm having to learn the system coach Brown uses," he explained. "I'm having to learn how to play the other shot forwards around the league." Curiously, Grevey said Givens' defense has impressed him most. "He's gonna have some problems matching up, but his defense had really come along," he pointed out. "Jack is such a sound fundamental player, and Hubie has a lot of confidence in him." Grevey, who spent what he termed a "frsutrating" rookie season on the bench, said Givens is benefitting by getting considerable playing time his first season.

"I only played 500 minutes my first year, and Rack has close to that now," he said. "I know the playing has helped him he's made real improvement since I saw him in the exhibition season." In his third season starting for the Bullets, grevey is having one of the best shooting streaks of his career. His elght-for-11 night against Atlanta was preceded by a 13-for-24 spree at Los Angeles. His shooting doesn't concern him, nor does the Bullets five consecutive losses after winning four games in a row to open the season. "What are there, something like 75 games left?" he asked.

"Last year, we started off 2-8 and ended up world champions" Former University of Louisville standout Rick Wilson, another Hawks' rookie, scored two points, stealing the ball from Washington's Tom Henderson and driving in for a layup. "I'm getting to play about 18 minutes a game," he said. "My time's increasing, and it's making me more confident." Johnny Davis, the quick guard acquired from Portland in the off season, and Rickey Sobers, a schoolyard-tough ballplayer from the Bronx, N.Y., helped the Indiana Pacers down the Cleveland Cavaliers, 119-114, Tuesday night. Bucks 114,. Kings H2: Brian Winters scored 27 points and) Marques Johnson 23 as Milwaukee broke a fourgame losing streak.

Warriors 139, Spurs 138: John Lucas had 29 points and 14 assists, to lead Golden State past San antonio in overtime. Suns 120, Knicks 108: Paul Westphal tossed in 35 points and Phoenix scored 12 straight points during a fourminute span of the fourth quarter to down New York. Lakers 134, Nuggets 107: Adrian Dantley scored 22 points Lou Hudson 20 and Los Angeles made 67 percent of its shots in the third quarter to beat Denver. Trail Blazers 112, Pistons 96: Lionel Hollins scored 13 points in a 15-4' fourth-period urge that carried Portland past Detroit. (UPI) -Speculation on Fred Pancoast's successor as Vanderbilt football coach began to build Tuesday and athletic director Roy Kramer said he will have to put together an "enticing sales pitch" to attract a new coach. Kramer said the process of searching for a successor to Pancoast was just getting underway Tuesday and that he had not talked to "a single person" about the job. With the college season still underway, many prospective applicants for the job were reluctant to discuss the possibility. But Ole Miss defensive coordinator George Maclntyre said he was "definitely interested." "I would love to sit down with Mr. Kramer and talk with him and see what kind of man they are looking for," he said.

"If Vanderbilt is ready to make a commitment like it says it is, I'm definitely interested." Texas Tech coach Rex Dockery, whose name has also come up In the speculation, had no comment.
