i MELROSE Eugenia Hanfmann, founded Brandeis counselling center; 78 Eugenia Hanfmann of Watertown, a psychologist and psychotherapist who established the Psychological Counselling Center at Brandeis University, died Tuesday in Waltham Hospital two weeks after suffering a cerebral stroke. She was 78. Born in the Soviet Union, she received her doctorate at the University of Jena in Germany and came to this country in 1930 when she became a research associate at Smith College. She later worked at Worcester State Hospital and Rhode Island State Hospital, focusing her research on the assessment of human personality. Miss Hanfmann worked for the Office of Strategic Services (OSS) from 1944 to 1946 making evaluations of the men selected to be officers of the intelligence agency that became the CIA.

After World War II she worked at the Harvard University Russian Research Center and in 1952 joined the faculty of the Brandeis University Department of Psychology. She was named professor of psychology in 1956, and although she retired in 1973 she continued to serve as a consultant at the counselling center. tine leaves three brothers, George of Cambridge, Alexander of Allentown, and An--drew of Olympia, Wash. Christine Murohv PAULA JEAN CLERICO Paula Jean Qerico Excelled at Weymouth school; 15 Paula Jean Clerico, who would have been a sophomore at Weymouth South High School, died at home Wednesday of leukemia. She was 15. Her friends and family said that throughout her illness she bravely maintained high academic standards and would have been invited to join the Weymouth South Chapter of the National Honor Society in her junior year. Miss Clerico had an avid interest in writing and painting and was described as having great love for children and animals. Family members said "her strong will to live was an inspiration to all who knew and loved her.M She leaves her parents, Rudolph and Yvonne (Miiani); two brothers, Mark and Robert, both of South Weymouth, and her two grandmothers, Bianca Miiani of South Weymouth and Severina Cook of Hingham.

DURHAM, N.C. Dr. Thomas Edward Math-eson, 29, of Durham, a native of Lowell, and chief resident of family medicine at Duke University Medical Center, died Wednesday in Durham County General Hospital. Dr. Matheson was a graduate of Northeastern University and Tufts Medical School.

He opened his practice in Durham two years ago. Sister Claire Lane, 84 Missionary 38 years, Boston teacher WORCESTER Sister Claire Lane of the Sisters of Notre Dame, a native of Lawrence, died Tuesday in St. Vincent Hospital.

She was 84. Sr. Lane was a missionary for 38 years in Japan, where she was held in detention throughout World War II. She returned to the United States upon her release after the war, but a short time later returned to Japan as a missionary. She served until 1970.

Before her missionary duties, Sr. Lane taught in Notre Dame schools in the Boston area, including St. Joseph's in the North End, St. Gregory's in Dorchester and Cardinal Cush-ing High School in South Boston. She leaves three cousins, Msgr.

William Oren, 32 Killed in downing of Korean jet A memorial service will be conducted Sunday at 1 1 a.m. in Temple Aliyah, Needham, for William Oren, 32, one of the passengers in the Korean jetliner shot down by the Soviets two weeks ago.

Mr. Oren, who grew up in Sharon and gradu ated from Northeastern University in 1974, was on a buying trip to South Korea, Hong Kong and Japan for Howland's Department Store. He had worked for Howland's in New Hamp-sh ire, Connecticut and Massachusetts and more recently in New York. His home was in Middle-town, N.Y. He leaves his wive, Maureen (Manning): a 20-month-old son.
