The International Race of Champions (IROC), ultra-successful between 1973 and 1980. will feature 12 drivers in identically prepared Chevrolet Z28s. The idea is to determine which of the dozen is the best driver, as all things mechanical will be equal.

Grand National's Bobby Allison and Darrell Waltrip have already been named to the series, and others will come from NASCAR. SCCA Trans-Am, IMSA GT and the CART Indy-car series. IROC opens and closes at Michigan International Speedway this coming year, and will also stop at Cleveland for the big race weekend there July 7-8, and at the Talladega 500 weekend July 28-29. Charlie Elliott and his race-promoting partners. Ken Smith and Russ Conway, have struck again.

After breathing life back into Hudson (N.H.) Speedway, they have purchased Lee Raceway from Bob Bonser and have reported they will rejuvenate that southern New Hampshire track, too. The trio was very successful running Star Speedway in Epping, N.H., a track Elliott sold to Bob Webber this year after Webber had leased it for two years. Now, the Elliott-Smith-Conway tracks surround Star. Just a few years ago Star and Lee, only a few miles apart, were beating each other's brains out going head-to-head on Saturday nights. Because transportation and race-car development costs are taking a terrible toll on world championship competition. The Formula One people might have been able to hold their big beachhead on this continent (despite the huge price they have to charge promoters), except for the success of the American counterpart" of the world championship open-wheeled racing machines the Indy-type cars and their aggres sive car owner-dominated organization.

Championship Auto Racing Teams (CART). The CART crowd was not only able to adapt its show by turning its series into as much a road-course as an oval-racing group (when the trend was to temporary street-type tracks pioneered by Formula One), but also to convince the organizers of two of Formula One's US races at Long Beach, and Las "'Vegas that they could put on just as good a show for a lot less money. -V "-i CART has also snapped up the biggest potential plum of all. It has scheduled a race in metropolitan New York for next cjuly 1 pulling the rug out from under the Formula One crowd, which had been eyeing the important New York area No. 1 market in the world," say the marketing experts), scheduling races there for two years but failing to deliver.

When auto racing was promot- i cd for the parking lots of the huge Meadowlands complex just off the New Jersey Turnpike, a feasibility study was conducted by an organization called Sports Consultants International (SCI). The company, headed by Brian Turner, director of marketing for the Long Beach Grand Prix since its inception, told the Meadowlands people that there is a lot to be said for both Formula One and CART But the bottom line has to be costs, and that's why the Meadowlands opted for Indy cars. The study is very revealing, re-; lating how "astronomical" costs of fielding Formula One teams have escalated, from between $2 million and $3 million a few years ago to between $6 million and $7 million today. A.S.P., Walpole A. The NHL rule states that (players shall wear a helmet approved by the rules committee.

How come? 1 xy a costs and "the teams' voracious appetite for new development." At I-ong Beach, the promoters' cost for just prize money and transportation (bringing the teams from overseas) had risen from $500,000 for the first race in 1976 to $1.85 million this year. No wonder Long Beach switched to Indy cars for 1984. with the series opening there April 1. And that Las Vegas switched as well, and will close the CART series on the Nov. 10-11 weekend.

Formula One may have lost two US customers, but it still has a new race scheduled for Dallas and 1984 races scheduled at Detroit and Montreal. Still, Formula One people are obviously very worried. Perhaps because they know that Dallas may not be a lengthy commitment, while the Detroit race is having financial problems and must turn a profit this year. So, when ru mors surfaced that Montreal might possibly switch to CART, too, the Formula One people declared war At least verbal war. When CART refused to rule out a possible Indy-car race at Mont real this coming season, saying its 15-race schedule just might accom modate one more, FISA, the Paris-based organization that oversees Formula One racing, was prompted to issue a warning to its 60 mem ber nations.

FISA pointed out that CART is an outlaw organization, never hav ing come under the international group after splitting off from the US Auto Club several years ago. It voiced displeasure with some of CART's attempts to go internation al. "The situation has worsened in the past few days," said the FISA announcement, "because CART has made proposals to different countries to transform what was only a national championship into a new world championship, in to tal violation of the international sporting code," which was estab lished by FISA. FISA said if CART persists in such action, anyone taking part in the CART races would be banned from international or national events sanctioned bv FISA or its members. 'The CART reply not only is that the FISA edict would be worthless in US courts, but that unless For- SPORTS ington in the championship game of 1940.
