BOSTON SUNDAY GLOBE AUGUST 20, 1978 5- PENDLETONS the good-time wools 2 rr -'r. -mY SAND ARTISTS Ed White of South Easton finishes up his entry in the Sand-castle Competition held yesterday at Steep Hill Beach in Ipswich. He was one of many seeking the "golden shovel award" offered by the Friends of Sandcastles. (Globe photo by John Blanding) Emerson graduates 613 men, 19 persons' By Louis Kaufman Globe Staff Emerson College held commencement exercises yesterday for one of the smallest classes of the academic season, but with columnist Art Buchwald orating no class of any size ever laughed more. It was a pleasant memory for the "13 men and 19 persons," as Buchwald called 'the graduates, including his daughter, Jennifer Marie, who received a bachelor of fine arts degree.

Buchwald, who received an honorary degree in literature, said that when it comes to a college diploma," you should take one when you can get it." He added that he never finished high school. More than anything, he told the graduates at First and Second Church in Boston, "We, the older generation, have given you a perfect world and we don't want you to do anything to louse it up." Under any circumstance, he said philosophically, "whether it's the best of times or the worst of times, it is the only time you've got." Citing an era of uneasiness for many people, Buchwald commented that "for every uptight person in the country there exists an uptight organization to back him up." He said he wanted the National Rifle Assn. to know that he considers it very personal "that my neighbor has a gun and he can't even water his lawn straight." The nationally syndicated columnist and satirist said it was inconceivable that a country with more than 210 million people can't find a productive president, saying of President Jimmy Carter: "I worship the very quicksand he walks on." Further, Buchwald, added, tongue in cheek, that he approached Carter following Bible class and told him how it is: "We never promised you a rose garden." Recalling the Nixon resignation, the columnist said he was at the White House that day, which, he said, seems like centuries ago. although it was less than four ago. He said it's important to re member that not a tank or any form of militarism was visible that day in this country of 210 million people only an orderly process. "And any country that can do that cannot be all bad." the store with you in mind wm jk p. sJf mm imnznmm ill IRpili 1 LNVVt PURE WOOL The Woolmark label is your assurance of quality-tested fabrics made of the blazing new trails the skirtsuit with short cut blazer!
