Inc Passes Will Be Accepted A loverly record After "The Belle of Amherst" what can Julie Harris do for an encore? Well, she can play an eight-year-old Victorian actress, as she does in "Trustable Preshus Friends." By my calculation, this makes her five years younger than she was in "Member of the Wedding" a few decades ago.

"Trustable Preshus Friends," however, is a recording issued by the Cambridge firm, Pathways of Sound, of a performance compiled by Jane Douglass from the letters and diary of Elsie Leslie, the American theater's first child star. And I hasten to add that at no time does Julie Harris literally try to mimic Elsie. Instead, this is a reading, a captivating one, in which the movements of a child's mind and feelings are rendered through the subtlest shadings of tempo and articulation. Elsie isn't exactly a household name; I had never heard of her, and presume her career lurks in the dimmer recesses of our stage's archives. But she was a beguiling youngster, who succeeded in charming Mark Twain, Oliver Wendell Holmes, Helen Keller, Joseph Jefferson, Frances Hodgson Burnett, Edwin Booth, Eleanor Roosevelt, even an auditorium of Philadelphia newsboys.

She's a subject who might engage the imagination of any actress. "The play is about how the burglar loves me so much he won't burgle any more," Elsie Leslie confided to her diary following her New York debut in "Edith as Burglar" with Daniel Frohmann's company, Sept. 22, 1887. The part had come to her through the offices of Joseph Jefferson of "Rip Van Winkle" fame. Jefferson, a friend of Elsie's financially-beset father, was directing the show.

When Elsie joined the company, her father gave her a diary, and, good Victorian child that she was, she kept it dutifully. Spelling was not her strong point. Evidently she wrote "lovely" as "loverly" more than a half-century before "My Fair Lady," and persisted in such Daisy Ash-ford spellings as "verry" and "trustable." Of course this can't be rendered by vocal means without seeming arch; nevertheless, Julie Harris conveys the verry special texture of Elsie's expression. "Edith" preceded stardom in "Little Lord Fauntleroy" at Boston's Museum SACK CINEMA NATICK 237-5840 ROUTE 9 OPR. SHOPPERS' WLD.

II THF WI7 8 ELSIE LESLIE first child star Theater, then more stardom in "The Prince and the Pauper" where she played both roles.

Indeed Elsie persuaded Mark Twain to permit dramatization of his novel (he didn't want to adapt it himself, observing that "he liked the fun but not the though his initial response was, "Make a play of 'The Prince and the Pauper'? My God, child, it would be longer than 'Hamlet'!" So we witness Elsie acquiring professional aplomb. William Gillette teaches her how to fence, Edwin Booth admits he has to rest every afternoon before a performance, saving energy. In Hartford there is a tempest of tears when Elsie, romping in a hayloft with Susie Clemens, must be dragged to a matinee. Performing in Boston again, "not at the dear old Museum Theater but at the Hollis Street," a much larger house, she is a seasoned actress. The reading concerns Elsie Leslie's life until she appears with Otis Skinner in the all-star cast of "The Rivals" as Lydia Languish.

She is just 20. Jefferson, who. has again directed, sends her from Tiffany's a cut-glass cookie jar bearing her initials. Looking at the jar, she muses that Jefferson's memento is "like completing a circle, isn't it?" and then in a luminous flash of feeling brings forth one of those lines that seem to illumine a vast horizon of emotion: "It's full of cookies, too." There we leave Elsie holding her Tiffany cookie jar. It is unwise to gaze into the future of child stars; the Philadelphia newsboys who sent a bouquet at their performance of "The Prince and the Pauper" enclosed a note telling Elsie to bring the basket back to the store.

How radiantly, though, does Julie Harris evoke a brief enchantment. The player's craft, the spoken word, and magic.
