221 21 15 20 Another of Mr. Lewis' claims to fame was that he once pinch hit for Babe Ruth. It was in 1914, Ruth's rookie year with the Red Sox. "Even as a rookie, Ruth was one helluva pitcher and he could also hit the ball," Mr. Lewis was quoted at a Baseball Writers Dinner in Boston in 1972.

"Manager Bill Carrigan put me up for him because there were streaks when he struck out a lot in his first year." Mr. Lewis also had the distinction of seeing Ruth hit his first and last major league home runs. He was a teammate of Ruth's on the Red Sox when Ruth hit his first homer at the Polo Grounds (where the Yankees played) in 1915. Twenty years later he was traveling secretary for the Boston Braves when the Babe hit his 714th and last home run at Pittsburgh. Many who never saw Mr.

Lewis as a ballplayer remember him as the traveling secretary for the Boston and later Milwaukee Braves. He always believed in having his team go first class and became known as a big tipper. His motto was "Pay another buck and go first class." Doormen, waiters, bellhops and cab drivers in National League cities looked forward to visits by the Braves and by Duffy Lewis with the snap brim fedora, the diamond stickpin, the fancy vests and collars and the generous bankroll. Mr. Lewis was never voted into the baseball Hall of Fame, a sore spot with many oldtimers who felt he deserved the honor and who worked for years in an attempt to get him in.

His outfield mates, Speaker and Lewis, both are in the Hall of Fame. Speaker went in as part of the second group of inductees in 1937, and Hooper followed in 1971. After playing with the Red Sox, Mr. Lewis spent a year in the Army and then two years with the Yankees before winding up his playing career with one season in Washington. He became traveling secretary for the Braves in 1931 and remained with the team in Boston and then Milwaukee until his retirement in 1961 at age 73.

He spent the latter years of his life in retirement in Salem, N.H., spending much of his time at Rockingham Park where he had a VIP box. His wife, Eleanor (Keane) Lewis, died three years ago. A private graveside service will be held tomorrow in Salem, N.H. By Don MacAulay Globe Correspondent George Edward (Duffy) Lewis of Salem, N.H., a star outfielder for the Boston Red Sox in the early part of this century and later a traveling secretary for the Boston and Milwaukee Braves for more than 25 years, died yesterday in Salem, N.H. He was 91.

An outstanding offensive and defensive outfielder, he played with the Red Sox from 1910 through 1917 and was instrumental in Boston's winning three World Series in 1912, 1915 and 1916. Along with Tris Speaker and Harry Hooper, he formed what many consider to be the greatest outfield combination ever. He wound up with 1518 lifetime hits, including 289 doubles, 69 triples and 37 home runs. He had a lifetime batting average of .284 and drove in 793 runs. Mr.

Lewis' defensive wizardry, especially his uncanny ability to catch balls on a slope of grass in left field at Fenway Park, led to that terrain becoming known as "Duffy's Cliff." The grassy slope, an 8- to 10-foot incline that led up to the wall in left field when Fenway Park was built in 1912, baffled most outfielders until it was leveled off in 1934 when Thomas A. Yawkey bought the Red Sox. But the way Mr. Lewis could go up and down that incline like a mountain goat led to its being named in his honor. He played the treacherous slope for six seasons and mastered it.

"I'd go out to the ballpark mornings," he once told former Globe sports editor Jerry Nason, "and have somebody hit the ball again and again out to the wall. I experimented with every angle of approach up the cliff until I learned to play the slope correctly. Sometimes it would be tougher coming back down the slope than going up. With runners on base, you had to come down off the cliff throwing." Mr. Lewis was the Red Sox lef tf ielder for eight consecutive seasons, including the championship years of 1912, 1915 and 1916.

In 1912 the Red Sox beat the Giants, in the World Series, four games to three. In 1915 they beat the Phillies, four games to one, and Mr. Lewis batted .444, going 8 for 18 including five hits in two games against the great Grover Cleveland Alexander. He batted .353 in the 1916 Series against the Dodgers. One of his favorite memories was of his game-winning hit at Fenway Park in 1912 that drove in Tris Speaker to give pitcher Smokey Joe Wood a 1-0 victory over Walter Johnson in a fabled match-up when both pitchers had lengthy winning streaks at stake.
