I. 117. Ill I I -I By Bob Monahan Globe Staff HANOVER, N.H.-Boston University's football team is for real alright. It more than proved it here yesterday afternoon when it scored two touchdowns in the final quarter to beat Dartmouth, 20-17 before 9750 at Memorial Field. It marked the first time in history that BU knocked over the Big Green which had won the previous eight games.

And to the surprise of no one Mai Najarian, BU's driving running back, scored all three touchdowns even though he carried the ball the fewest times this season. But Mai didn't care. He just likes the idea of being 4-0 and hopes he can do something against UMass next week. This game had it all. Late in the quarter Dartmouth hustled from its 21 to BU's 2.

Dartmouth went for a play up the middle and the ball ended up in the arms of BU defensive back Greg Jones who recovered it for a touch-back. Jones did the same thing last week against Northeastern. BU had the ball on its 20 and was pushed back to the 15 with less than 50 seconds to play. Regular punter Sean Weeks couldn't kick because he was injured during the game and BU coach Rick Taylor gave the task to Bob Pendergast who shanked a punt for 8 yards. The Dartmouth people went wild.

Dartmouth took over on the 23 and couldn't score as the clock ran out. Buddy Teevans came close twice, but no cigar. Taylor said, "We were really pumped up for this one. Dartmouth kicked the hell out of us last year and we quit during that game. The players and coaches took a vow never to quit again.

"Well, we certainly didn't quit today and we came back to win. The defense played extra well and the offense was decent. We're a good team, but we'll get better. "Najarian? That kid carried the ball over 70 times the last two weeks. I wanted to give him a rest.

Besides, we have some other good bal carriers, too. A rest for Mai is just 20 to 25 carries a game instead of 35 to 40. He did a fine job. We had many fine performances. "8ut we had to play as hard as we could.

Dartmouth has a fine team and they had an edge on us in overall talent and depth. We did it we did it." When Dartmouth jumped off to a 10-0 lead on a touchdown by Greg Henry and a Chris Sawch field goal, BU seemed to be in for a long afternoon. But the defense OPEN DAILY TIL in Till o.tn ill nil I bd(a iau OPEN DAILY CHELMSFORD, W0BURN, HAVERHILL, H. WEYMOUTH, CHELSEA 1MlkI SUNDAY, SALEM, N.H. 1-6 WED.

Dartmouth had a lengthy scoring drive in the third quarter capped by Jeff Dufresne's one yarder and then the Terriers took command both ways. A 96-yard drive was climaxed by Najarian's second touchdown and moments later alert Omar Lopez recovered a fumble on the Dartmouth 21 to set up Mai again. Najarian said, "It was an easy day for me.

But what a game to win. We were up really up. I thought the defense was just great. Let's face it you've heard it before, but it was a team win. Yes, we are for real.

"No I don't care how much I carry the ball. I just like winning. Now we think about UMass." Dartmouth coach Joe Yukica said, "BU has a fine team. We moved the ball well enough to win, but we gave it up too often. They managed to get excellent field position before that third touchdown after that fumble recovery.

But we still have a young team and we'll improve as the season goes on." Taylor was being congratulated for a long time after the game. He spent six years at Dartmouth as an assistant coach and his friends were more than glad for him. In the past, BU had a jinx on it to fold in tight games. That's gone. Yes, Terrier football is really for real.

The Engineers, now 4-1, scored 17 points in the first 6:24 of play but were tied in the third quarter. Lehigh's break came in the fourth when Eric Yaszemski recovered a Delaware fumble on the Blue Hens' 37.

The score followed. Freshman kicker Chuck Bushbeck's 33-yard field goal with one second left gave Villanova a 17-14 come-from-behind win over Richmond. Trailing 14-7 with five minutes left, Shawn Passman capped an eight-play Villanova drive with a two-yard touchdown plunge. The Wildcats gained possession again two minutes later. Quarterback Gary Uzelac kept the ball to score Lafayette's decisive touchdown in a 17-14 win over Fordham.

The victory snapped a three-game losing streak. Fordham led, 14-10, and the Leopards stopped a Ram drive on the Lafayette 23. Lafayette took over and Uzelac completed five passes for 54 yards on the winning drive. Dave Heverling kicked a 36-yard, first-quarter field goal and Uzelac threw an 11-yard touchdown pass to tight end Rich Smith to give Lafayette a 10-0 lead that evaporated by the middle of the third.
