2B-THE VICTORIA ADVOCATE, Wednesday. March 3, 1976 er No Patsy Mutg Undefeated in Regular Season, game Saturday will help," said Rutgers Coach Tom Young. "If we had blown them out, it might have been tough to get our kids to respect Respect. That's something Rutgers has shown only grudgingly to its opponents, most of whom realistically didn't deserve it. The Scarlet Knights played only one ranked team, Princeton, and the Tigers dropped from the polls following their 75-62 loss.

If Rutgers beats LIU, it figures to play 16th-ranked St. John's, N.Y., in the tournament finals Saturday. St. John's drew. St.

Peter's in the opening round. Like St. John's, Rutgers played superbly during the first half of the season but has been unimpressive in recent weeks. "That's because everyone we played over the last seven or eight games knew they could make their season by beating us," Young said. "They come in super-psyched against us.

They Jump higher and shoot better. That's why it's so tough to go undefeated." But the toughest part is yet to come. two in They have to go 7-0 or no one outside of New Jersey will ever remember they were 26-0." Kalbaugh also said the pressure of an undefeated season carries into the tournament. "You get a little bit edgy. You know everything's been going your way and you get a litle superstitious.

A call goes against you and, where before you wouldn't think about it, now subconsciously it affects you." But Phil Sellers, the Scarlet's career scoring and rebounding leader, disagreed. "The pressure's off now," he said. "After the Princeton game (Feb. 2), everyone started talking about us going undefeated. Now I feel we can relax.

We went undefeated. If we get upset along the way, people will still say we were a great team." Last Saturday, Rutgers downed Long Island University 103-87. By a quirk in the pairings, the Scarlet Knights and the Blackbirds meet again in the ECAC opening round. "I think the fact that they gave us a NEW BRUNSWICK, N.J. (AP) The season of perfection for Rutgers had barely been entered into the NCAA record books when Mike Dabney threw down the gauntlet.

"We've gotten to one plateau. It's time to move on to another," said the senior guard. "I'm kind of hoping it boils down to Rutgers and North Carolina in the finals of the East. Then we'll see how tough the ACCis." Dabney spoke amid the champagne-drenched pandemonium in the Rutgers locker room following Monday night's 85-80 victory over St. Bonaventure.

But down the hall, in the quiet of the visitor's dressing room, Bonnies assistant coach Billy Kalbaugh had some sobering thoughts. "The thing that Rutgers has to realize is that now they're zero and zero," said Kalbaugh, a member of the Bonnies' 196768 team that was undefeated during the regular season but lost twice In postseason play. "They've got to win two In the ECAC, one in the NCAA preliminary round, two in the Eastern Regional and Associated Press Wlrephoto regular season undefeated by beating St. Bonaventure 85-80. It was received by tournament officials the day after a violent thunderstorm had washed out the third round of the ambitious but weather-plagued Tournament Players Golf Championship.

It seems the Indians had been holding some sort of Bicentennial pow-wow in the nearby Everglades. As part of their ceremonies, they'd been doing a rain dance for about a week. Said they were sorry for the trouble they'd caused. Said they'd knock off the dancing. They did.

The sun came out. The tournament finally ended a day late and considerably more than a dollar short. Jack Nicklaus' charging victory his second in the three-year history of this tournament made the tournament an artistic success. From a financial standpoint, however, it was less than a complete triumph. Not only was Saturday's round washed out, so was Wednesday's pro-am, a celebrity-packed affair that DALLAS (AP) Two Texas basketball players declared ineligible by the Southwest Conference have signed affidavits that they were offered cars by the Universityof Texas, Houston and Baylor.

The pro-am at this site in 1975 when it was the Jackie Gleason-Inverrary Classic pulled in the largest gallery of the year on the tour.

Those financial losses, the short galleries, the bad weather, are Just part of the continuing problems the TPC has encountered in Its announced goal of reaching major-tournament status equal to that enjoyed by the recognized Big Four the Masters, the U.S. and British Opens and the PGA. "It is only fitting," PGA Tour Commissioner Deane Beman told Nicklaus at the presentation ceremony, "that Jack Nicklaus be the first player to win all FIVE (Beman emphasised the word) of the major two times." "Make it 'six major corrected. "I won the U.S. Amateur twice, too." It was a very obvious put-down.

"It's being run into the ground," Nicklaus said later when asked for comment over the TPCs major-tournament goal. "Let's wait 10 years and then we'll see. "They've got most of the ingredients of a major championship. They've got the finest field in the world. But they don't have a tradition behind them.

That takes time. Let's just give" this tournament a little time." Nicklaus, of course, owns a record 14 major professional championshipsr-five Masters, 'fo'uT PGA, three U.S. Opens, two British Opens. He doesn't count the two TPC among them. "Sure, I'd like to win this tournament three or four or five times," he said.

"If it does reach major-tournament status, I could just add 'em to the list." But it obviously at least in mind doesn't enjoy that high role at the moment. The tournament, the championship of the touring players, has had little but problems in its brief, three-year history. The Inaugural, in 1974, was delayed a full day by a series'' of thunderstorms in Atlanta. The second one, In Fort Worth was played in typical Texas August heat and occasional storm. Those two were played in late summer.

This year the event was moved to the winter tour in hopes of giving It greater exposure, greater importance. And they had a problem finding a place for it. At least two sites, hosts to regular-season events, turned Uiem down before Gleason gave up his own tournament to make room for the event. Then such players as Nicklaus and Lee Trevino said, under questioning by newsmen, that the Inverrary layout-while a good course was not a major championship course. And then it the folks stayed the tournament was a day late there were all kinds of problems.

Said touring pro Larry Ziegler, watching from the clubhouse while the rain came down, "I think even the Good Lord doesn't want this to be a major championship. To which Commissioner Beman replied: "Maybe He is just testing our resolve to make it one." "BUY Jarvls Williams, but added: "We'll definitely have an in-vestigation Into these allegations." A SWC official told The Associated Press: "Anytime any alleged violations are called to our attention, we investigate. All our schools are always under investigation are giving no more and no less credence to these charges than any other alleged violations called to our attention." (AP) Ed Price, whose Texas football teams went from first to last in five years of coaching, died Monday night at bis home. He was 67.

Price had been a university administrator since he quit coaching in midseason 1956, but he was best known as a Longhorn athlete and coach. From 1951 through 1956, his teams won one Southwest Conference title and tied for another, but his 1956 team finished with a 1-9 record, the worst In the Longhorn's 82-year football history. What his friends remember most, however, is his refusal to accept the idea that winning Is everything in college football. He once told reporters before an intersectlonal game that, "Overemphasis is not on football but on the victory. Sure, I want to win, but we don't teach our boys that's the most important thing.

I firmly believe the effort in striving to win is the thing that Price was promoted from line coach to head coach in 1951 at $12,000 a year to replace Blair Cherry, who resigned under pressure from fans even though his final team lost only to Oklahoma 14-13 in regular season. Price's 1952 team won the SWC title and whipped Tennessee 16-0 in the Cotton Bowl. His 1953 squad tied Rice for the conference championship. In 1956, however, the number of seniors on the team had dwindled to four, and two of them were hurt, and Texas avoided an all-losing season only by edging Tulane 7-6.
