Slocum doesn't like the taste of the town's water anyway, and buys bottled spring water when he wants a drink. But for many others in the town of 22.000, especially restaurant owners, the need to boil the bacteria out of their drinking water has been a nuisance.

Water in Amherst, particularly around the University of Massachusetts campus, was found last week to contain too high a level of the bacterium coloform, and officials in the state's Department of Environmental Quality Engineering (DEQE) asked residents to boil drinking water for five minutes as a safeguard against disease. Jim Holeva, assistant sanitary engineer for DEQE, said efforts are being made to lower the contamination level by flushing the town's water pipes and tanks. By the end of this week, Holeva 'hopes, the bacteria level may be brought down to an acceptable level. The problem is caused by a vari-. ety of things, even this year's infestation of gypsy Holeva said the age of the city's pipes and chlorination facilities, and the recent rains that have swept gypsy moths and other organic material into the reservoirs, all have played a role in the contamination.
