The Buskers looked like they were on the march the first time they got the ball. Starting on its own 18, Nebraska ripped off four straight first downs. But when Monte Anthony was nailed for a one-yard loss on a third-and-two situation, Coyle trotted on the field to hit his 33-yarder and a 3-0 Individual Statistics Nebraska Offense Rushing No.

Davis Missing For the second week in a row, fullback Tony Davis missed the first few plays of the game. Against Miami it was because he forgot his chin strap and had to go back to the dressing room. This time it was for a readjustment of the pads which were protecting a hip injury. "They had me bound up so tight it was killing me," Davis explained. "I had a burning sensation in the hip all afternoon, but at least it was bearable after they loosened up the tape a little." Nebraska had one drive early in the second quarter spoiled by an Anthony fumble at the end of a 16-yard run.

Then, on the next possession, sparked by a 33-yard scamper by Craig, the Huskers gained the Kansas 30. But a fourth-and-one smash by O'Leary failed to pick up the distance. Late in the second stanza. NEBRASKA(M) KANSAS 3-2 '0 LSU 7 14 Wash. St.

Then came a pass interference penalty against the visitors which put the ball on the 12.

O'Leary gained seven yards on two carries, but a third-down Ferragamo pass was just off the fingertips of Bobby Thomas in the end zone and it was Coyle's turn again. His 22-yarder made it 6-0 with 1:06 left in the first half. a a a close to snatching the lead away from Nebraska in that final minute before intermission. Cromwell ripped off a 20-yard run and then threw a long bomb to split end Waddell Smith, who made a f--Cornhusker Quotes-- Defensive Tackle John Lee On Kansas quarterback Nolan Cromwell: "On some wishbones you have to worry most about the backs but with Kansas you had to worry about the quarterback and the backs. Cromwell seemed to find the open spot once in a while and he was quick.

They told us that Cromwell wouldn't pass much and that was a good change." Linebacker dete Pillen On his recovery of a Nolan Cromwell fumble: "I was just in the right place at the right time. It was some type of a pitch and he just pulled it out from the runner." On the Kansas wishbone attack: "We were prepared for everything. But when I was watching the films earlier in the week, it seemed like there were backs going everywhere "it feeis really good to get a shutout. Kansas was the leading ream in rushing in the Big Eight and Cromwell had been voted back of The week for two weeks in a row and it's really unusual for anybody to do that in the Big Eight, Wing back Curtis Craig On the touchdown pass to Brad Jenkins, a play on Craig was in the same vicinity and almost caught the ball: "I was running a pass route and I saw the ball coming but I didn't really see Brad. I was glad Brad was there to catch it." "Our counter sweeps were working better today because we made some changes during the week in the steps the Quarterback takes.

The timing was better today I felt like I might go all the way a couple of times." Fullback Gary Higgs I On starting the game when Tony Davis had some trou- 1S ble adjusting his pads to protect a hip pointer: "It was a 3 I surprise to me too. I thought I would have to wait until 4 next year." "How do you know when you've made a good hit on the blocks? Man, you can hear the bells ringing in your head." Defensive tackle Mike Fultz On facing Nebraskan Butch Mascarello, an Omaha native: "We played across from each other during some of the game. We didn't have much to say to each other." Monster Back Wonder Monds On picking up the blocked Kansas field goaf. I charged a little bit. Butterfield and Pillen went after the ball but they ran into each other and went down.

I just grabbed the ball. I had hopes of going all the way because we don't yet to run with the ball that much." Cornerback Dave Butterfield On being called for roughing the punter in the first quarter: "The punter's foot hit me right in the face mask. I guess I was pretty deep on the angle at the kicker, but I didn't think I hit him that hard." Split end Bobby Thomas On fumbling the attempted Kansas field goal: "I thought I could break it for a touchdown because their line was blocking up front and the kick was low. I was running up and the ball popped way out." On the near touchdown on a third-down Vince Ferragamo pass: in the last two minutes of the first half: "The ball just nipped the end of my index finger." Tight End Brad Jenkins On his touchdown reception: "I committed a mortal sin on that play because I let the cornerback bump me to the inside. But it was the first time all day that the corner- back played the bump and run.

As a result, I didn't take as wide a path as I am supposed to take. The ends take the cornerbacks to the outside and that's to leave Curtis and myself with the safety. We try to make the safety declare. Whichever guy the safety follows, the other guy should be open. I knew something was wrong because the area was more crowded than it should have been, but Terry just threw a dynamite pass right over the top of the safety." Linebacker Jim Wightman On suffering a knee sprain on the first defensive series and an ankle sprain the next time on the field: "I thought it was going to be a plenty long afternoon.

"At halftime we used a tighter taping and I was about in the second half. Right now, I'm plenty sore." On getting his first extended duty defending against a wishbone team: "For me, I would rather play a running team anytime." fit Never Happens When You Expect Vols Defeat LSU, 24-10 Our October special, a complete belts and cooling system inspection, can prevent unexpected headaches during tne coming months. Kansas had time for just one running play a three-yard loss when linebackers Pillen and Percy Eicheiberger got through to KU halfback Bill Campfield before trying a field goal in me last three seconds. And that was blocked! End Ray Phillips came flying hi to knock down the try and preserve the shutout. Phillips and cornerback Dave Butterfield chose an angle protected by a single Kansas "He went for 'Butter' and I had an open lane.

I hit the ball with my forearm and wrist," Phillips explained. "It was great," Pillen added. "It looked to me like Phillips was 10 feet off the ground." Ferragamo guided the Huskers to four straight first downs after receiving the second-half kickoff, marching from the 33 to the Kansas 20. Davis then powered forward for eight yards on first down, but the next two plays fizzled and Coyle came through again for a 9-0 lead with 9:53 left in the third frame. One other third-quarter drive looked like a winner, going from the Nebraska 17 to the Kansas eight, but a clipping penalty set the Huskers back.

On third down a Ferragamo pass was intercepted. "We moved the ball well, but we're out there to score," Ferragamo observed. "I think the offense will continue to improve and get better as we go. It's nice to have a great kicker like Coyle, but we shouldn't have to call on him that often." Luck Returns Terry Luck, the starting quarterback for the first four games, returned at the start of the fourth quarter and needed just five plays and 1:43 on the clock to tally Nebraska's only touchdown and produce the final score. Anthony ripped off runs of 15 and 12 yards (he had the wind knocked out of him and was sidelined for the rest of the day after the second scamper), then Davis gained seven.

Luck had a pass tipped but caught by Thomas for a short gain, then connected with tight end Brad Jenkins on a spectacular 26-yard aerial for the touchdown. The pass appeared to be headed toward wingback Craig before Jenkins "intercepted" it. "Both receivers aren't supposed to be in the same area," Luck explained. (See Jenkins explanation in "Cornhusker Quotes" elsewhere on this page). "I'm supposed to watch the safety to see which one he covers, then throw to the other.

The Kansas safety just dropped straight back. I was aiming for Brad. Maybe Curtis thought I was throwing it away and headed over there to try for a catch." Luck called Kansas "big and strong. That No. 77 (defensive tackle Mike Butler) was dynamite.

And we "had some mistakes. But I don't care if it's 56-0 (last year's score) or 16-0. It's just nice to open in the Big Eight with a win." COMPACT "Visitors' Views Split end Waddtll Smith "I knew I'd be open (on the 50 yard pass from Nolan Cromwel I near the end of the first half) so I told the offensive quarterback I could beal the corner on either side. Confidence comes within every athlete and I knew If he threw the ball, I would get It." Did Smith think he had a touchdown on his dlvlig catch? "Not at all. I knew when I went down I was short and the first thing I thought of was to call time out.

It was a good pass, and something in the play action really sprung me loose, but my speed didn'f hurt. (Smith was the Big Eight indoor 600-yard dash champion). Punter-defensive back John O'Rear "That was the first time I've ever played defensive back in a game. I've only practiced there for two weeks." On apparent mixups in KU secondary when backs were moving around "We had a new defense in just for this game where you just cover a man and stick with him, so we were changing depending on where our man was. On being a late addition in place of regular punter Bob Swift on the 48-man travel limit "We ight have been in trouble if our other kicker came because he doesn't play any other position.

Supposedly I get the ball off quicker, but with the limit, I think the main reason was I can play defense too." Defensive back Chris Golub "Both Nebraska's backs (John O'Leary and Tony Davis) are hard runners. I've never tackled any tougher. Tony put me out once when we colli.ded. I was just in a daze. On makeshift secondary after injuries to himself and starter Kurt Knoff "Both our subs are pretty smart players and did a good job considering the situation." Center John Morgan "Everyone else I've faced, I've been able to out- quick John Lee.

He's an excellent football player. I films and knew he was a good nose. But Nebraska hurts you because they pursue so well down the line where most noses just slant." Offensive tackle Lindsey Mason "We have the type of offense where a little breakdown in one place can really hurt you against a fine team like Nebraska. And that's what happened. The Nebraska defense was extremely agressive, but not as much as Kentucky." Penn St.

(UPI) Penn State's crushing ground game and Chris Bahr's talented toe Saturday overpowered fumble-plagued and previously undefeated West Virginia 39-0 in a battle of Eastern powers. The Lions ran for four touchdowns and Bahr kicked field goals of 52,35, and 21 yards. Penn State also got two points on a safety when a bad pass from center sailed out of the end zone. Penn State benefitted from seven West Virginia fumbles, six of them recovered by the Lions, and a pass interception.

Four of the fumbles and the interception led directly to Penn State scores. The Lions completely outmus- cled the Mountaineers to snap a four-game West Virginia winning streak. West Virginia failed to get a first down until the last minute of the opening quarter and never crossed midfield until five minutes remained in the first half. The Mountaineers had only W. Traveling Squad Decisions Osborne said he believes Kansas became a victim of the 48- man travel rule after going against the big-strong Husker defensive team all afternoon. It's a problem the Huskers will face next Saturday when they play on the road for the first time this season at Oklahoma State. "We're going to have to decide early in the week who'll probably go and work with them," Osborne said.

"Obviously we're going to have to double up at some positions like I-back and fullback, wingback and split end. "We'll take the 48 best players." He thought having the first five games at home was "very good" for Nebraska. "It gave us a chance to use a lot more people than if some of the games had been away," he said. Just 50 players got into the Kansas game, but in the first four tilts the full 60-man squad saw action every Saturday. Anthony ran for 15 and 12, Davis gained 7 and Thomas caught a tipped pass before Luck found Jenkins in the end zone. Nebraska 3 Kansas In addition to the normal number of bumps and bruises, Nebraska suffered two injuries which required medical attention against Kansas Saturday. Linebacker James Wightman strained his right knee and after returning to action sprained his left ankle. "The ankle is a reoccuring thing," Nebraska trainer Paul Schneider said. "I don't think the knee is too bad but we'll keep a close watch on it." i a i received a gash on his chin which required stiches after catching a pass late in the game.

He was credited with a 22-yard completion though losing his grip on the ball after the head-on tackle which followed. "I don't even remember catching the ball," Heiser said later. "I recall making my cut and seeing the ball on its way. a a i Schneider said he expected everyone on the squad to be alright in time for the Oklahoma State game next weekend. 20 Irish Survive N.C.
