The next three plays, however, were not Tursky's finest moments.

He threw incomplete, lost two yards on a quarterback draw and then intentionally grounded the ball while being sacked, moving Maine back to the 29 and forcing a punt. Instead, it was no contest at all, the next two quarters belonging to UMass. McEvilly ran the option six yards behind left tackle Karl Nyholm to make it 14-0, and tailback Cliff Pedrow (13 carries, 62 yards) took an option pitch and cut inside his right end with 1:54 left in the half to By Harry Eisenberg Glebe Correspondent AMHERST The Maine football team has something to look forward to this season: It no longer has to play Massachusetts. That problem was resolved in the usual way yesterday when the Minutemen (1-1), drubbed the Black Bears (0-3), 38-14, for their 14th consecutive win in this less-than-classic series. The only positive note for Maine was that the 14 points were the most it has scored against UMass in 20 years, and were five more than its combined total against the Minute-men in the past nine years.

Unfortunately, the 14 points did not come until the final quarter, when the Bears were no longer within range of First Downs Rushing yards Passing yards Return yards Passes Maine 16 16 222 38 26-14-0 3-3 8-79 'II I 11 i A IV i-. i A 1 I 'lzJ fi iff 4 I c- i i i i ft l'f I -'-yy" i it -x 1 Punts 4-340 Fumbles lost 1-0 Penalties yards 10-159 INDIVIDUAL LEADERS Rushing Player (Schooll Att. Early in the third quarter, Frank Di-Tommasso recovered a Tursky fumble at the Maine 47 and five plays later Pedrow went around left end, broke two tackles and scored from the nine. Both of Maine's touchdowns were set up by pass interference calls. The first moved the ball from the UMass 34 to the three after a call on cornerback Kevin Sullivan, setting up a one-yard fourth-down run by fullback Steve McCue. After freshman Gary Pearson returned the ensuing kickoff 97 yards and Sandro Vitiello added a 36-yard field goal, Maine moved 88 yards in just four plays, closing out the scoring.

"We came up here thinking we could play with them," Maine coach Jack Bick-nell said. "We really did. We thought on a muddy day like today the passing team should do all right.

We just could not handle their pass rush." Massachusetts, which was soundly beaten last week by Villanova, 35-7, scored on its first possession, moving 58 yards with quarterback Mike McEvilly going over on a one-yard sneak. Maine had a chance to get on the scoreboard late in the quarter when it moved from its 47 to a first down at the UMass 18. Three plays netted just seven yards, and a botched handle of the snap on a 28-yard field goal attempt gave Massachusetts possession at the 37. Maine had a second opportunity to put up points early in the second quarter, moving from its 31 to a first down at the BU's Mike Lonneman can't stifle a yawn in BU's home opener yesterday. The Crusaders quickly overcame some early jitters and charged ahead on Brian Doherty's spectacular 50-yard sweep and the first of Jim Cobb's five placement points.

From then on, they dominated the play. "It was good to finally get it going," said HC coach Neil Wheelwright after his Purple forces, superior both ways in the scrimmage line, had intercepted five URI passes, captured four fumbles and profited heavily from the strong punting of Larry Ewald and the kick returns of Glenn Verrette. "I was pleased with our defenses; they really hit," said Wheelwright. "And Dave Boisture (sophomore quarterback from Franklin) may have come of age after his early fumble. We took some pressure off him by calling the plays and he responded with an outstanding performance." "I knew that after my four fumbles at New Hampshire, nothing worse could happen to me," said Boisture, whose father was once varsity football coach at HC.

"Doherty's great run discounted my early mistake and I gained a lot of confidence after Verrette intercepted that pass and raced it back 35 yards for our second touchdown and some breathing space." Verrette, a senior from Andover, also ran back four punts for 79 yards and set up two of the three touchdowns which blew the game apart in the third quarter. Crocky Nangle scored two of these, the first on a short plunge after linebacker Chris Duggan had stolen a pass and the other on a 35-yard burst up the middle. In between, flanker Phil Johnson raced 16 yards into the end zone on a razzle-dazzle reverse which caught the Rams' defense off guard. Wheelwright mercifully withdrew his regulars at this point and HC played the scoreless final period with a flock of deep substitutes. Still, URI got across midfield only once in the final half, and then on a long pass, from Greg Meyer to Chris Ougheltree.

"Naturally, I was disappointed," said URI coach Bob Griffin. "I had anticipated a close contest, and I felt we could still win after trailing, 14-6, at the half. But the turnovers ruined us. I was much impressed with Holy Cross and Boisture." Despite the one-sided score, URI used the passing of Meyer and the swift scampers of Leroy Shaw to keep the offensive statistics fairly close. The victory could prove costly to HC.

It lost senior wingman Mike Murnane with a severe knee injury and promising freshman Andy Clivio with a damaged ankle. mfcrowe. ISfBfs Mfr's iugg. price Mass. Hdwe.
