The spots I kicked from really weren't that bad." Pelin received some extra kicking tutoring last spring. Patriots placekicker John Smith came by one day and told him to keep his head down. "He told me I was lifting my head a little too early, and he tried to get me to groove my swing." Not in the groove yesterday was HC quarterback Neil Solomon (10 for 29), whose 58-yard touchdown pass in the closing minutes last week had led the Crusaders past Brown, 14-7.

"The field was tough," said Solomon, a senior making only his second career start, "but there's the old "cliches that they (BU) had to play on it too. I just obviously didn't have a very good game today. It just comes down to me. I've got to execute the plays the way they're designed and I just didn't." See our Open House ad in the professional section of today's Classifieds. raytheon) An Equal Opportunity Employer MF By Harry Eisenberg Globe Correspondent WORCESTER With four fumbles in the first eight plays from scrimmage, a steady rain and a muddy field, it looked like one of "those games." But the rain stopped, the fumbles gradually subsided and Jeff Pelin kicked three field goals as Boston University defeated Holy Cross yesterday, 16-7.

Both teams slogged off the field at halftime tied, 7-7. But in the second half, the BU defense held Holy Cross to minus-23 yards rushing and Pelin booted field goals of 29, 34 and 39 yards as the Terriers improved their record to 7-1. "We're playing right now for everything we've talked about here for three years," said BU coach Rick Taylor, whose team would stand a strong chance of getting an NCAA Division 1-AA playoff bid if it wins its final two games against Connecticut and Bucknell. "This is a helluva win for us." Holy Cross won the opening toss and elected to kickoff, a move that had all the earmarks of brilliance when BU tailback Mai Najarian (39 rushes, 164 yards) fumbled on the first play from scrimmage and Glenn Verrette recovered for the Crusaders at the BU 36. Holy Cross, which had offensive problems all day couldn't move the ball more than three yards after three downs and was forced to punt.

BU was more opportunistic a few minutes later when Al DeLuca recovered a Larry Ewald fumble at the Holy Cross 46. Najarian ran the ball eight times and caught a pass in the 11-play drive, going 4 yards for the touchdown behind blocks from Frank Kirmowski and Mickey Santos. Holy Cross' only score was set up by a 33-yard interception return by Verrette to the BU 30 in the second quarter. Seven plays later, halfback Crocky Nangle scored over left tackle from the 2. "In the second half we played precisely as we wanted to," said Taylor.

"We didn't make any mistakes and we waited for the breaks. Pelin did the rest." Pelin, a sophomore whose three field goals tied a school record, hit his first from 29 yards out, early in the third quarter. At 7:05 of the final period, he added a 34-yarder, set up by a 29-yard keeper by quarterback Jim Jensen. The third field goal, from 39 yards out with less that four minutes to play, put things out of reach. "I lost my footing on my first attempt," said Pelin, who badly missed a 48-yarder early in the second quarter, "and I was really scared the footing was going to affect the rest of my kicks.

Forget the score. New Hampshire beat Rhode Island, 21-6 yesterday, but for all its worth the game was over in the first quarter when UNH freshman running back Dwight Hamsley rambled 42 yards for a touchdown. It was a long afternoon for Terry Lynch, a freshman who was thrust into a starting role for Rhode Island after three other quarterbacks had fallen by the wayside earlier this season. Lynch, from Cumberland, R.I., suffered through all the traditional forms of baptism of a reserve-turned-starter. He fumbled a snap and took a shot on the jaw from a defensive lineman.

Then he topped it all off by coughing up the ball on a rather bizarre play. With a fourth down on the New Hampsire 28, Lynch dropped back to pass. He cocked his arm and gave it a fling, but there was no ball. Lumbering behind him for 66 yards going the other way was New Hampshire's Bob Doherty, who had plucked the ball from Lynch. "I didn't see him.

I really thought the ball had fallen to the ground. I was thinking that the referee blew the ball dead. I didn't even know the guy was running for a touchdown," said Lynch. "I think they were thinking about canceling the game because of the rain. But I wanted to play.

I was ready. I know there will be better days." Plus FET 1.59 to 3.09 per tire.
