the state title for Arling ton Most of the time Arlington used what amounted to an eight man line and while it was wide open for passes La Vega could do nothing by that route as Glenn Schutza star burly Pirates broke down and cried like babies after their 7 0 loss to Arlington What made the scene even more heart rending was the music and cheers that seeped through the con crete wall from the frenzied Ar lington dressing room only 10 yards away It was so quiet in the La Vega quarters that the Pi rates could hear the celebrating even better than their own whis pers and sobs Coach John Hugh Smith tried his best to cheer up his downtrod den warriors but the Pirates were inconsolable all played good games vou did the best you could" Coach Smith told one player after anoth er "Hold your heads up got nothing to be ashamed Tremendous Blow It was a tremendous blow to the stocky coach to see his greatest team lose the State championship by one touchdown but he had no excuses "Arlington has a great club by far the best played and they just whipped us said Smith "It was a fine game for both teams and it was well offi ciated They had a wonderful line and an awfully good pair of ends "Those ends just let us get around them" Smith contin ued we tried an end run those ends would head for the sidelines and cut us off They were plenty tough to block We could not quite shake our fast boys "No I think we played as well today as we did against Don na last week" Smith admitted even if we had that Arling ton bunch still might have beaten us They had a terrific team Sure it hurt us because Glen Shut za pass with his bad arm but no excuse Arlington just had a better team Penalty Hurt a Lot "I thought we were going to score the first time we got the ball and that penalty really hurt us It wiped out run to the Arlington one yard line and set us back to the 15 Instead" Smith pointed out The La Vega players didn't feel like talking about the game but a few of them were able to make comments through clenched teeth and quivering lips Carl Eddy Rose who played a tremendous game at end and never stopped yelling and firing up his teammates admitted Arlington had a great team but was a bit dis appointed in the much publicized Rusty Gunn "Gunn as good as Curry of Donna He's slow but he sure can xtwlst and whirl and that makes him hard to stop That Arlington quarterback was really cool and called a good Rose com mented Good Defensive Team 'Little Carroll Dailey who tried his best to get La passing attack started remarked that Ar lington had a good defensive team season Gunn was good but not good as he said Guard A Purvis just shook his head and limped out when Coach Smith patted him on the back and said he played a fine game Many of the Pirates stretched out on the stone floor without re moving their uniforms and others sat on the benches and stared gloomily at the walls Most of them bucked up a little after taking hot showers out they were still red eyed as they left the dressing room Girl Take It Hard Same of the La Vega students took the defeat even harder than the plavers particularly the mem bers of the Corsair Corps band and the cheer leaders Many of the girls wept in the arms of their mothers after the final gun sounded and most of the cheer ing section was misty eyed during the final quarter Arlington's dressing room was crammed with delirious parents and fans who were hugging and kissing the happy Colts lash bulbs were popping right and left as out of town photographers snapped pictures of the players in ail kinds of wild poses Someone had written "State in four foot letters on the dressing room blackboard and other fans brought in green pennants bearing the words: "Arlington Colts 1951 Class AA State La Vega Not the Best Head Coach Mayfield (Bull) Workman admitted that La Vega was the best Class AA team Ar lington had faced but said that he thought Weatherford a triple A team was stronger than the Pi rates really two years "We played our best defensive game of the season today This is the first team we've held scoreless but we had to today They've really got some rough linemen" he pointed out Quarterback Raymond Glasgow the touted Arlington passer said the terrific wind messed up his passes but added: "We to pass much anyway when we could run instead We wanted to stay on the ground until we were two touchdowns ahead the way done all season Our best play was Gunn's off tackle smash" Running Praised Arlington' two tiny halfbacks 130 pound Bob Kirby and 125 pound Larry Devault both heaped praise on the Pirates Kirby admitted that had us plenty worried especially in the first quarter He thought that Dailey was La best back 'That litle guy ran us rag ged I thought he was a lot bet ter than he said Devault said he was nervous throughout tne game the clock half" Wind As the out to climb into their chartered bus a crowd of fans gave each player a rousing cheer Assistant Coach John Polzin the jovial gi gantic mentor hugged the players so hard that one of them claimed he got a broken rib and Scout Larry Mildren who saw Arling ton play for the first time since September was crazed with joy The Arctic weather didn't damp en enthusiasm but it certainly hampered the band's half time performance When the band tried to decorate a human Christmas tree the wind whipped the red and yellow for the bat tered and bruised La Vega Pirate to lose at Baylor Stadium Satur day afternoon but on this cold windy day It also would have been a hard game for the Arlington Colts to lose When all Is said and done La Vega lost it because it failed to take advantage of its best scoring chance and when Arlington got its scoring chance it was not to be denied It came through and won the game 7 to 0 to become the Double A high school champion of the state It was not a spectacular game The folks who went out to cheer the serpentine glides of Billy Kel ler or La vega ana nusty uunn of Arlington saw both bottled up for the most part by hard charging lines It was a game In which the defensive lines for the most part were in charge and proved to be the only game we have seen in many moons which did not produce one completed pass Neither team completed a pass Penalty Hurts Early In the game La Vega was in complete charge and seemed to be In fine shape In that first quarter La Vega bucked the strong wind In doing so it kept control of the ball and kept the Arlington team in a deep hole That was when La Vega missed its scoring chance It lost the chance largely on a penalty rom the nine Keller roared on down to the two but on that play the La Vega back field was in motion The penalty of five yards was costly Indeed It was really a 12 yard penalty as It put the ball back on the 14 and probably cost La Vega a touchdown The crucial play of the first half however came on the last play of the first quarter and It was a mistake that might have cost La Vega the game The clock was about to run out In the quarter when third down was completed tne ciock snowing six seconds to go On this occasion the Arlington hoys were very smart They called time out to force La Vega toklck against the wind as It was fourth down and five to go The ball was near midfield and the La Vena punter had been doing a good job In booting low kicks against the wind A kick here would have had Arlington In a hole to start the second quarter against the wind That Is when things looked very good indeed for La Vega Here La Vega tried the doubtful strategy It gambled for the yard age when it was no time to gamble The play lost ground and Arlington started the second quar ter on the La Vega 48 instead of having the ball deep in its own territory However the visitors did not score from there They staged a 69 yard drive for a touchdown with four minutes and three seconds to plav in the half Goal was kicked and that was the ball game The La Vega team came back and advanced up the field with time running out They went into a spread nut Arlington played smart football again giving Carroll Dailey a chance to run from the spread and sending many men down the field to break up passes Dailey it seemed intended to pass but never did so on the series of downs after reaching Arlington territory and in running he suc ceeded only in running out the clock La Vega umbles Most of the second half La Vega was in charge but could not get over the hill on crucial plays In the third quarter La Vega was on the march and Dailey made a first down on the La Vega 35 but fumbled and Arlington recovered It was one of the few fumble plays called correctly by the officials It was a quick whistle most ot the afternoon and fumbles that were made were not counted although they were made before the for ward progress of the ball had stopped On one occasion a La Vega player took the ball away from an Arlington player on the Arlington 36 as the Arlington play er was moving forward but the official erred in giving the ball back to Arlington In the fourth quarter La Vega lost its last chance It moved down to the Arlington 26 and seemed to be In full cry but a pitchout was fumbled ana lost eight yards That stopped that drive That was La last scor ing chance but to the everlasting credit of the Arlington ends and tackles Jet it be laid that they were great defensively on the pitchouts La Vega did
