23 THE VICTORIA ADVOCATE, Sunday, October 28, 1973 it 4 Eire ummm. lyers Lapc 1 1 I -5 Sf 0 i By JULIUS ERMIS Advocate Sports Writer 5 SCHULENBURG The St. Joseph Flyers punched across two second half touchdowns but had to rely on a stout defensive performance to edge their way past the pesty Bishop Forest Rangers 16-14 to take the lead in the Texas Catholic Inter-scholastic League District 2-AA race here Saturday night. The victory gave coach Steve Tibiletti's Flyers a one-game edge over the Rangers in the standings as they pushed their league slate to 3-0 and season ledger to 4-3. It was their 11th straight district conquest.

Meanwhile, the loss snapped a five-game win skein for the Rangers as they fell to' 2-1 in district play and 5-2 for the season. The two clubs meet again in two weeks in Victoria. The Flyer defense proved its ruggedness against the rush and in clutch situations, especially late in the fourth quarter. Saski, who rushed for 92 yards on 15 carries slashed his way into the end zone for the deciding two points. The Flyers held Bishop Forest to 88 yards on the ground but the Rangers amassed 129 yards in the air, which kept them in the game. St.

On a fourth-and-one situation, the defense, led by Saski stopped fullback David Janda at the one, killing the drive.

The Flyers took over and quarterback Paul Holm, who was slowed by a knee injury, guided them to the 18 where they were forced to punt. Holm's attempt was blocked and Bishop Forest's Dennis Wagner picked the ball up at the 2 and stepped across the goal line for the touchdown. The Rangers cut the lead to passes for 95 yards and one touchdown in the Vols' previous six games. TCU Coach Billy Tohill often put double erage on Morgan but his speed and elusiveness were too much for the Horned Frog defenders. The victory boosted Tennessee's record to 6-1.

TCU dropped to 2-4. Tennessee's other touchdowns came on a two-yard pass from Holloway to end Tommy West; an 11-yard toss from Holloway to flanker Tim Fitz-patrick; a 26-yard run by tailback Sid Witherington, and a 34-yard field goal by Ricky Townsend. Quarterback Lee Cook, subbing for Kent Marshall, engineered a 69-yard fourth quarter drive for the Horned Frogs' touchdown. Tailback Danny Scott plunged from the two for the TD and Berl Simmons kicked the extra point. The Vols and Frogs exchanged punts three times in the first period before Holloway directed a 70-yard mach in four plays for a touchdown, dumping a two-yard pass to West in the end zone after faking a line plunge.

Townsend's field goal, his sixth of the season, came after safety Eddie Brown had returned a TCU kick 18 yards to the Frogs' 22. The Texans bottled up Tennessee's rushing attack rather effectively, limiting the Vols to 192 yards on 35 carries. Most of the yardage came late in the game with the visitors obviously tired. Holloway and Valbuena collectively completed 12 of 27 passes for a total of 245 yards. Tailback Mike Luttrell was the Frogs' leading rusher, netting 57 yards on 16 carries.

It was then the Rangers' turn as they put the ball in play at their own 28 following the ensuing kickoff.

They drove to the Flyer 28 with the aid of a 20-yard pass interference call on the eighth play of the drive. Pesek then pitched back to halfback Mark Besetzney who lofted a 28-yard pass to end Gary Krupala alone in the end zone. Pesek's attempted pass to Krupala for two points failed as the Flyers led 84.
