Will someone please explain what is happening with Holy Cross football? It's getting out of hand. It was one thing for a squad that had lost 27 of its prior 31 games to string a six-game win streak.

Maturity, confidence and adapting to a new coach can bring swift changes. But Holy Cross went into Michie Stadium yesterday and destroyed an Army team that clearly was favored because it plays at a higher level of competition. The score was 31-0, Holy Cross, and at that Crusader coach Neil Wheelwright had to call off the dogs. "We weren't anxious to run it up," Wheelwright said despite the fact that Army coach Homer Smith had called time outs while walloping Holy Cross 48-7 last year. The Crusaders jumped in front 3-0 when the first field goal try of Mike Smith's career went 41 yards through the uprights.

Holy Cross made it 10-0 late in the first quarter on a fake field goal. Smith swung through with his right foot from the Army 16, then sped into the left end zone where holder Peter Colombo lofted the ball to him. When he kicked the point the score was Smith 10, Army 0. The score went to 17-0 in the final minute of the half after Holy Cross linebacker Curt Bletzer made the second of his three fumble recoveries on the Army 21. On the next play Brian Doherty took a pitchout right, broke a direct hit on the 15, faked out another tackier on the 8, then drove inside the flag for the TD under two more tacklers.

Meanwhile, Army went past midfield only twice in the first half, once to the 38 and once to the 7. On one drive Army surrendered the ball on the 16 as Bletzer again snared a fumble. Holy Cross took the second-half kickoff and swept 79 yards in seven plays to put the contest out of reach. Doherty sped 34 yards for the big gainer on a Wishbone run to his right. Larry Ewald added 27 yards on a burst over right tackle.

Crooky Nangle scored the TD straight ahead from the one. "We hit them with some adjustments on that drive," Wheelwright explained. "They overplayed us on the pitchouts in the first Holy Cross closed out the scoring in the final moments when Colombo water-bugged to the right from the Army 12 on a keeper play. The play culminated a 45-yard drive set up by Dane Creste's interception: It "xj marked the 13th time in five games that the Crusaders have converted a turnover into a touchdown. Colombo was the darling of some 6000 Holy Cross faithful who went to West Point for the game.

There is no quarterback in the East 'who is so small, so slow- and has such a weak arm. But also there is no other who can so control Wheelwright's multiple offense, which the coach laughingly says is too confusing to explain. Since Colombo was installed as the starter late last season, Holy Cross has not lost. "If someone told me when we were losing all those games when I was a sophomore that this would happen, I wouldn't have believed it," said the grinning Colombo after the game. But, Wheelwright focused on his defense.

"They play with that abandon you hear about," he said. The same, following a 35-3 win over Daifmouth, made it the first back-to-back shutouts in 19 years for The Crusaders. Seven consecutive victories is the most since 1945. And the squad of 57 yesterday included just seniors. So it's more than a bumper sticker.

Palazola responded by taking BC on a 15-play drive that was finished off with a 24-yard field goal by Tim Moorman at 9:08 of the first period to give BC a 3-0 lead. BC defensive back Jeff Ryan proceeded to pull off three big defensive plays and Tulane was the team that looked off balance. Ryan intercepted a Roch Hontas pass in the end zone late in the first period.

He later recovered a fumble by Jeff Jones at the BC 7. He then busted up a pass to Alton Alexis at the goal line and BC still had its 3-0 lead midway into the second quarter. After that, Murray missed a 44-yard field goal attempt with 2:22 left in the first haif On the first BC play, Mike Curry fumbled it back to Tulane. When BC held, Murray missed one from 39 yards with 1:02 to go. On the next play, Dan Conway fumbled and, with 0:14 left, Murray kicked a 43-yard field goal to tie it, 3-3, at intermission.

On the second play from scrimmage in the second half, Curry fumbled at the BC 29. Tulane picked up one first down on a 9-yard reception by Darrel Griffin at the BC 14 but, once again, the BC defense dug in and Tulane had to settle for a 27-yard Murray field goal and a 6-3 lead. Palazola then took BC from its own 36 to the Tulane 8 with Anthony Brownx picking up 27 yards as he cut back to the outside at the line of scrimmage and went to the 23. On the second down piay, Palazola then threw the interception that all but ruined BC. Still, after Murray kicked his third field goal at 7:29 of the final quarter, BC went on its final drive.

Palazola kept it on one run for 18 yards to the Tulane 40 and, two plays later, it was third and one at the 31. Conway was stacked up. Fourth and one. Palazola came up short. So BC is 0-5, with two open Saturdays ahead before its next game on Nov.

4 at Villanova. In the five defeats, BC has fumbled 32 times, losing 20. In five games, BC has scored only 35 points. Somewhere, something is wrong, and Chlebek will spend the next two weeks searching for the answer. By Joe Concannon Globe Staff NEW ORLEANS With 3:46 to go in the game, Boston College quarterback Jay Palazola stood there alone and watched as the officials measured for the first down that would have kept the drive alive.

When it came up inches short, all he could do was walk away. On a fourth-and-one situation at the Tulane 31, Palazola had kept it on a quarterback sneak into the center of the line. He failed to make it, Tulane took over and ran out the clock. In effect, it was a tableau that said much about the way things have gone in this troubled season at BC. The final was Tulane 9, BC 3, before 27,177 last night in the Louisiana Superdome.

For BC, it was one more in a string of frustrations under new coach Ed Chlebek, who must be wondering if his time will ever come. BC has now lost its first five for the first time since 1951. Fumbles? Yes, there were three by BC, all deep in its own territory. Two were turned into field goals by Ed Murray, who provided all the points Tulane (2-4) needed with the three he kicked in the game. Interceptions? Only one, hut it was picked off by Tulane in the end zone.

That came on a second and eight situation at the Tulane 9 at the start of the fourth quarter. Palazola rolled to his right, scrambled and threw it into the arms of Tulane linebacker Marty Wetzel. "I had Paul McCarty open in the end zone," said Palazola. "All I had to do was throw it over the head of the defender." "I don't know how a team can play so hard and not seem to get a win," said Chlebek. "I thought our defense played well and came up with a lot of big plays.

Except for a few breakdowns, our offense played pretty well, too. We moved the football the best we have this year." For much of the week Chlebek said he planned to go with freshman quarterback Dennis Scala. But Scala had a bruised right shoulder and, when he was still below par on Thursday, Chlebek went with Palazola, who started 4-3 4-40 3-1 4-48 Navy" 31-8 Oukt 0 8 0-8 Navy 7 7 14 3-31 Nav-Klawinski 1 run (Tata kick) Nav-Calahan 5 pass from Leszczynski (Tata kick) Nav-McConkey 29 pass from Leszczynsi' (Tata kick) Duk-Stopper 4 pass from Dunn (Dunn run) Nav-McConkey 17 pass from Leszczynski (Tata kick) Nav-FG Tata 33 A-21431 Duke 8 34-82 40 149 6-16-4 6-35J 3-2 3-36 Navy 18 60-214 128 40 11-14-0 5-370 1-1 5-37 First downs Rushes-yards Passing yards Return yards Passes Punts Fumbles-tost Penalties-yards INDIVIDUAL LEADERS Rushing Player (School) Att. From Wire Services Quarterback Joe Montana rallied Notre Dame to three fourth-quarter touchdowns, and Jerome Heavens shattered legendary George Gipp's career rushing record yesterday to lead the Irish to a 26-17 victory over previously unbeaten Pittsburgh at South Bend, Ind.

The Panthers, ranked No. 9, had forged into a 17-7 lead early in the fourth quarter when Rick Trocano scored his second touchdown of the game on top of a 33-yard field goal by Mark Schubert. Faced with the possibility of their third loss of the season, the Irish suddenly caught fire. Montana directed an 86-yard drive which ended with an 8-yard touchdown pass to Kris Haines. Notre Dame came right back with a 59-yard march which ended with Montana sneaking across from the 1-yard line after he had completed passes of 30 yards to Haines and 22 yards to Dave Masztak to put the Irish ahead to stay.

Moments later, the Irish recov ered a Pitt fumble and Montana hit Vagas Ferguson with a 3-yard touchdown pass to complete the brilliant comeback which marked Notre Dame's third straight victory after a pair of initial losses.
