Journal 11 Capital Statistical Record Beginning this weekend, 50 volunteers of the Nebraska National Guard will become participants in a cleanup of Nebraska's waters. On a a i guardsmen will collect water samples from 10 lakes and 43 tributaries flowing into the lakes. Samples will provide an assessment of the eutropbication threat and an identification of nutrient sources.

The project, in cooperation with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the Nebraska Department of Environmental Control, will see three specially-equipped jet helicopters, supplied to EPA by the Defense Dept, landing on the 10 Nebraska lakes to conduct a series of intensive water samplings. Eutrophication is described as one of the most serious water quality problems facing many areas of the nation today. Robert Payne, Washington, D.C., a representative of the EPA, told Gov. J.

J. Exon at a press conference Thursday morning. "Excess chemical nutrients, a phosphates, can overstimulate aquatic plant i a i a i deteriorates water quality so that fish die and the lake's aesthetic and recreational values are lost. Over an extended period of continued growth and decay of plant life, the lake can slowly fill to the point where it will disappear." It is not the intention of either the state or federal agency to lay mandates on known sources of pollutants to improve the situation, Dan T. Drain, director of the Nebraska Department of Environmental Control, said.

He said when the year-long survey is complete, results will come back to the state in the form of a research report, hopefully to be implemented in cooperation with land owners and the Soil Conservation Service. The project will be under the direction of Col. Burl M. Johnson, deputy adjutant general.
