By JOSEPHINE LOW MAN JF we can keep the body firm with exercise (and we can) there is no reason In the world why we cannot do the same thing to the face. It is true that we use elastic bands When we eat, talk, laugh, or frown, but we do so in a somewhat passive way.

The thought immediately arises that some people talk so much and eat so much that extra exercise seems superfluous. However, this isnt the same kind of exercise. If you are a lady, and I know you are, you keep your mouth closed when yqu chew and talk without spreading the lips far apart Believe me, when you take your facial exercises you will not look like a lady! Some people indulge in such grimaces when they (peak that tney do exercise the facial muscles more than others. This Is the rub. When we take our facia exercises we should have the skin well soak ed in an oily cream while faces are often extremely dry when talking and laughing.

If the face is soft while exercising the lines and little wrinkles which appear do not remain. Great care should be taken to start in gradually on the gyrations for the face. If you do them too strenuously you will tire the muscles. If possible, let your lubricating cream soak in for a half -hour or more before taking the exercise. After doing them lie down for a short rest period with your feet and hips higher than your head so that the blood will rush to the face.

Remove cream and dash ice water over the face and neck. If you wish to have it, send a three-cent-stamped, self-addressed envelope with your request for my leaflet tor facial exercises to Josephine Ljowman In care of The journal. FALLS DOWN STEPS. DOROTHY DIX Shop Around a Little Before Choosing Husband Those Who Keep Steady Company Many Years Usually Fall Out of Love Before Ceremony THEN young girls begin, to step out in the social world they are faced with the one-boy or the many-boy proposition. Shall they devote all of their time and attention and lavish all their charms upon one boy, or shall they spread their glamour over the multitude? This may seem a simple problem and that it does not matter whether Mary goes exclusively with Tom, or plays around with Tom, Dick and Harry, but, in reality, the girl is called upon to make one of the most momentous decisions of her whole life. On the way she answers it determines, to a large extent, whether she will be an old maid, or happily or disgruntledly married. Of course, there are two schools of thought on the subject. The one that might be called the one-bird-ln-the-hand is worth -two-ln-the-bush theory holds that If girl has annexed a reasonably steady date she should concentrate on him and not run the risk of losing him by scattering her shot.

No doubt this contention has its merits and is good advice to those girls to whom nature denied a come-hither look in the eyes. But, if it ever leads to the altar at all, it generally results in one of those marriages that are made by habit and not by romance, and that are deadly dull because both the. husband and the wife lost their taste for each other before they were ever married. When Johnny Jones and Mary Sue begin going together in grammar school and keep it up through high and college, they know each other too well. They haven't a single illusion left And when they finally do marry it is because they are forced Into it by public opinion.

Shoe Around a Bit Unfortunately we haven't any statistics on the subject, but I am convinced that a very large percentage of the husbands and wives who take to philandering and get divorces because they no longer love their mates were the steady-company keepers who were already out of love before they married. Then, in picking out a life companion It If obvious, that a girl should have ai wide knowledge as possible of the goods In which she Is going to Invest her all, and at least be able to compare it with other brands, but she cannot do this if her association has been confined exclusively to one boy. She may think that all boys are rather dull because Tom is, or that they step on her feet when they dance with her as Sam does, or that they are grouchy and have to be wheedled and flattered along as Percy does. And then if, after they are married, she meets onierilliant courteous, charming man and falls in love with him there is tragedy. For a girl not to look prospective husbands over before- she YOUR HEALTH Copyrighted by the McCoy Publications, Inc.

CITTING with the feet propped up on a desk or table may not be socially acceptable, but to a patient with varicose veins this position may give relief from the feeling of weight and heaviness in the lower legs. In this position the blood has a chance to "run downhill" and will empty out of the engorged veins faster than if the patient is in standing position, where the blood trying to rise in the legs and get back to the heart, has to fight against gravity. Therefore if you have varicose veins and have been standing up for a long time, and notice that the legs feel heavy, full, or tired, try to rest for awhile with the heels higher than the hip. Varicose veins occur in the superficial veins of the tower leg and thigh and may appear tortuous, knotted, bluish or purplish. In the beginning there is usually no pain although there may be a sensation of heaviness in the legs.

In this first stage, the main objection of the patient to the vari-cosed condition may be the objection that the swollen and ugly appearance of the veins makes the legs look bad. There may be some hesitation at wearing a bathing suit In the intermediate stage, the patient may notice that the legs ache and pain when he is on his feet for any length of time. As a general rule, the condition tends to become worse rather than better and eventually the patient may develop a varicose ulcer which causes considerable discomfort and interferes with the usual activity. The principal cause of varicose veins is a mechanical pressure on the veins as they emerge from the lege. Because of the pressure the veins do not empty themselves of blood properly and there is more and more of a tendency for the veins to fill up with a column of stagnant blood.

The abnormal pressure exerted by prolapsed or gans is as important a cause' as any. However, continued constipation may likewise act as a contributing cause, due to the pressure exerted by the weight of the retained waste material. The wearing of tight garters by women was formerly a cause of varicose veins around the knee, as the garters cut off the circulation, but now that more women are wear ing girdles which support the stockings from above, this cause is not as common as it used to THE OTTAWA JOURNAU 0 takes her pick is sillier than for her to buy the first hat she sees In a milliner's shop. Maybe it is the right thing, and maybe it isn but she ought to find out beforehand. Other Dangers.

And then, of course, there It always the danger that when a girl ties herself down to one date he will fade out of the picture and she will be left flat. Where girls and boys are concerned, nothing succeeds like success. To the girl who hath many boy friends more shall be given, but to her who hath only one he shall be taken from her. And when a girl gets out of circulation it is hard tor her to ever get in again. However, many girls disagree with my views concerning the folly of narrowing themselves down to one boy until he has popped the question and the wed ding day is tet.

One of them writes me that she used to go out with a number of boys, but now she only goes with one, and is having the time of her life. She says: "An evening with him at a hot-dog stand where the patrons dance to a vlctrola is more en Jnyable than going to the most beautiful and exclusive place in the world, for my companion is interested in what I am Interested in and I feel that am being as attractive and as glamorous as possible for a reason HIM. Fine, but this girl only proves the point I have been trying to make. She went about with a lot of boys until she found the one he wanted, but she wouldn't be so happy at her hot-dog stand If she had kept going "steady" with the first boy she ever thought she liked. see Show Consideration of Child's Temper.

Dear Miss Dlx We want to bring our 2-year-old baby boy up to obey us and have good man ners, but I think we are falling, He is very bad-tempered and con trary. My husband believes in lapping him across the face and putting him In his crib for every little thing that he does. I believe that at his age he should just have his tantrums out alone without having any attention paid to him. YOUNG PARENT. Answer For Heaven's sake, how old do you think your baby Is? Forty years? You are treat ing him as If he were an adult able of reasoning and calculating his line of conduct.

At 2 years old he is incaoable of understanding even what you want him to do, and probably what you consider temper is only his terror at the brutality with which his father treats him. When a child of that age goes Into a tantrum just -reave him alone and let him cry if out, but don't beat the poor little mite up, or expect him to have the manners of a grown-up. He isn't Emily Post, you know, or even Dempsey. DOROTHY DIX. be.

Repeated pregnancies are another possible cause of varicose veins. The treatment of varicose veins is usually an Individual question. In the first stage or at the beginning of the middle stage, such measures as correction of prolapsus or constipation, and local treatment given to the vein themselves with a piece of ice, may be all that are needed. These measures may not entirely remove the varicosed appearance but they will often help enough to keep the patient comfortable, and will prevent the veins from growing worse: In the severe stage, such methods of treatment as the Injection method, or removal of part of the vein, may be In order. The best plan is to let your doctor examine the varicosed veins and decide what to do.

Mrs. C. S. writes: "Will you please (tate something in your column about liver -stomach concentrate with ferric iron and vitamin complex as a remedy for grey hair?" A. According to my understanding of it, that component part of the vitamin complex having the seeming capacity to darken the hair, was recognized in 1038 and was given the name of "Anti-Grey Hair If this component has been isolated as yet In a pure state, I am unaware of it.

With its successful isolation it may prove a valuable remedy for grey hair. It is therefore possible that the prescription alluded to above hopes to make use of the anti-grey hair factor. Dessicated hog stomach, and liver extracts, are commonly used in the treatment of pernicious anemia. In this disorder there is a marked tendency toward premature greying of the hair. There is thus a possibility that the prescription was given in an attempt to cure pernicious anemia.

Without knowing more about the symptoms of the case, it is impossible to say whether pernicious anemia enter into the Jiffy Knit Robe Decks Baby in Style $Bfl835iMi Household PATTERN 8752 This lacy robe and cap, the newest thing for baby, is an easy Jiffy knit even though it looks so luxurious. You have a strong hand and your spade support is adequate for the jump raise of a vulnerable over-call. Three trumps are not enough for the jump raise of an original bid, but a vulnerable overcall, even at the one level, announces at least five winners and is almost always based on a five card or longer trump suit. (2) East's trap has turned into a boomerang. Having lost the chance to bid at a low level he now makes a "stab" to save game.

(3) Too many players would bid five spades at this point The pass is a model of proper bidding tactics and technique. South knows that North will realize he is not passing in fear. His previous strong bidding speaks for itself. Therefore this must be a forcing pass, allow North to choose between a double and a Ave spade bid. It is interesting to note that, on good defence.

South could not have made five spades. With diamond opening' and diamond return. South would have to lose a trump trick, in addition to the club ace and the first diamond trick. The five diamond contract met a horrible fate. East was unable to win a single trick in the dummy and had to be content with one club and five trump tricks.
