Joan Gels the Chills Feminine Lead in 'Wuthering Heights' Joan Fontaine got tnore than her share of chilling Initiations into screen horror technique during filming of but it took an event not in the script of the chiller to frighten her half to death. Miu Fontaine it co-starred with Laurence Olivier in which David O. 1 nick produced from a dii Joan FonUlae Maurier's eerie novel, and which is showing next Friday and Saturday at the Mayfair Theatre. The stage was set for a bit of spooky business. Miss Fontaine was giving a tense interpretation of a young lady working up to nervous breakdown, when a terrific crash abruptly halted, everything.

As sundry assistants led the trembling Joan to a chair and waved smelling salts, prop men found that some draperies being blown by a large fan had tangled with a five-gallon bottle of water, toppling it over. And a five-gallon water bottle makes a Grade A crash, Joan will testify. The star got over her shakes in about ten minutes but one of the hard-boiled prop men had to take the rest of the day off. Alfred Hitchcock, noted master of screen mystery and intrigue, directed and other important players in the cast include Judith Anderson. George Sanders, C.

"Even, I noticed Ellen Drew reports; after returning from England, where she made "French Without "There's something about that British climate which is thinning, and something about Hollywood which puts on weight. I'm on a diet, too." Sheean's "Personal History', falter Wanger has started production of "Personal History" after three years of story consideration.

A best-seller, based on the personal experiences of Its author, Vincent Sheean, possibly no screen story has been commented upon so often since Wanger bought the picture rights in 1937. The depression, wars in half a dozen countries and lightning-like changes in the map of Europe have made attempts to picturize the original story impossible. As a consequence, Alfred Hitchcock has come forward with an entirely new screen treatment and will direct it with Joel McCrea, Laraine Day, Herbert Marshall and Robert Benchley in the principal roles. This new film drama, which is being re-leased by United Artists, was given a gala premiere at the Elgin Theatre last Thursday where it aroused the husiastic Madeleine Carroll plaudits of a capacity audience. "My Son. My Son!" has a brilliant array of stars in Madeleine Carroll, Brian Aherne and Louis Hayward, a trio which enhances the picture by down-to-earth, unforgettable acting. Others who turn in excellent performances include Henry Hull, one of the best contemporary character actors, Josephine Hutchinson, Laraine Day, Sophie Stewart and Bruce Lester. With his usual skill for maintaining swift tempo and clear characterization, Charles Vidor has directed "My Son, My Son!" with a remarkable sureness of touch and with unsurpassed clarity of insight The story of "My Son, My Son!" is rich in emotional implications and everyday drama.

It concerns a father and a son, and the high hopes that fail to materialize. William Essex's dreams for his son fade into thin air when he realizes that Oliver is a vain and selfish young man. over sophisticated, insincere and cynical. Oliver realizes almost too late that he has brought misery to the' people who have surrounded him with love and understanding. Golden-haired Madeleine Carroll, portraying the role of Livia Vaynol, has never turned in a screen characterization to equal her present one in this picture; Brian Aherne and Louis Hayward, as William and Oliver respectively, play their parts with understanding and humanity which points up the story brilliantly; and the other members of the cast in the supporting roles make many notable contributions.
