9 36 Boston Sunday Globe March 2, 1975 MBTA ends Boston Maine's Ayer, Littleton, West Acton service; cites deficit This spring, another round begiaa in the jjnual negotiations for these communities and a dozen others outside the MBTA district which are served tinder special contracts. Several town decisions are expected to hinge on whether the Legislature votes to continue 50 percent state reimbursement for towns with contract service deficits. walked daily from his Ayer home to the 6:52 with his guide dog. Seventy minutes later he would, get off the train at Boston's North Station and walk two blocks to work as a dispatcher at Xerox Corp. This week, he will try to commute by bus.

It will cost $3.90 more than the train, which allowed the blind to ride free. Worse, the bus line terminates more than a mile from where he works. "It may cost me $30 a week to By John O'Keefe Special to The Globe AYER Commuter service from West Acton, Littleton and Ayer to Boston ended Friday, forcing some 50 riders to find another way to get to work. Elimination by the MBTA of the Boston Maine railroad service will be no more than an inconvenience for some, but others see it as a threat to their pocketbook. For example, Richard Wood, who is blind, identification stickers for Concord autos and other controls were suggested by the West Concord Village but, Concord Town Manager Paul Flynn said, "it might end up costing us more in time and money than we can bring in with parking fees." Like Ayer and Littleton, two North Shore towns may lose their service for failure to pay up or lose deficit charges.

Gunn said Ipswich and Andover town meetings will be given the option to pay up or -ose local rail service. Ayer selectmen say their tax rate jumped 34 percent last year, ana the town can't afford to pay a year when fewer than a dozen residents ride the train. Ayer Police Chief Elmer Whitehead surveyed commuters for a week last October. After he reported that the majority of them came from other communities, Ayer selectmen invited officials of West Acton and Littleton to meet to consider sharing the costs. The meeting was never held One oi these out-of-town users, a Groton man, said he has bought a second car to drive to South Acton and board the train there.

However, South Acton's parking lot is strained beyond capacity. Acton Town Manager Robert Dotson acknowledged that the parking problem is "horrible" and said he expects it to get worse this week when South Acton becomes the end of the line. Dotson said he will ask town meeting to consider purchasing some nearby land for additional parking. At West Concord, the next railroad stop toward Boston, the 108-car municipal parking lot is full of commuters' cars by 8 a.m., leaving later travelers and shoppers to compete for a few on-street parking spaces. A recent survey by Concord police revealed that less than 30 percent of the commuters' cars there were owned by Concord residents.

At the Trailways bus depot across from the Ayer train yard, railroad regular Dotty Dowman reluctantly prepared to switch to the bus. Although bus tickets are priced below train fare, Ms.

Bowman preferred the train because it is less likely to be delayed in traffic. "If I'm late more than once, I could get fired," she said. "It's no use trying to save money by taking the bus if it makes me lose my job." David Gunn, MBTA rail service director, said deficit was run up in 1974 by service to Ayer, Littleton and West Acton. Gunn says he would like to continue the two daily trains to Ayer and Littleton, but neither town has paid its bill for MBTA service since 1973. Frederick Morgan, superintendent of MBTA pri BOSTON DORCHESTER FRAMINGHAM QUINCY BROCKTON SAUGUS MEDFORD CAMBRIDGE STONEHAM Items available in all stores unless otherwise indicated on vate carrier services, said I statutes require towns outside the MBTA district to contract for service, but Ayer and Littleton have not contracted for service because of its high cost and the low number of residents using the line.

Acton's contract will not include service to West Acton, he said. rom: hiPGisiSD A 4 5 4 i frP "'Fh Ps- Jv I 1 hi A- 1 i if Pti Commuler Kichartl Wood, aided by Dick Sawyer and doff, arrive at North Station.
