BOSTON SUNDAY GLOBE April 17,1977 Can art skills be learned? National survey says they can be LEARNING Just like reading, writing and arithmetic, artistic ability can be learned, according to the first comprehensive survey of student achievement in art skills. The results of the nationwide study by the National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP), which involved some 27,500 students, suggested that performance in art and the skills needed for successful achievement can be learned just like other academic skills. recognition that art can be assessed and that certain aspects of art can and should be periodically studied," said NAEP analyst Sarah Knight. While many aspects of art cannot be defined and taught, she said, knowledge, skills, rules and standards can be acquired and applied. The survey, conducted during the 1974-75 school year among 9, 13 and 17-year-olds, indicated a steady progression of artistic achievement between the ages of 9 to 13 and 13 to 17.

female students are more artistic than male students. Indicated that black students and those from disadvantaged urban areas consistently achieve below the national average. Found that students from the central states outperform those in the West, Northeast and Southeast. The NAEP, which periodically conducts surveys of students' educational achievements, presented its findings early this month at the National Art Education Assn. Convention in Philadelphia, Pa.

"Listening to a child who has lost someone close through death or divorce can help to relieve a child's feelings without involving the teacher in the role of a therapist. If a teacher takes sides with one parent or tries to become personally involved she may sacrifice her effectiveness as a teacher, Dana said. Teachers can help by lightening the child's academic load if he has suffered a loss even though, he may not tell the teacher about it. "Many children regard school as their one refuge from the tensions of family life. These students are entitled to their "safe" environment Cont.

from preceding page to death at Newton South High School and at Watertown High School, signaling widening interest in the need for young people to discuss death. "It is important for us to understand our own reactions and be prepared so that we won't freeze when the time comes to talk about death in the classroom," Dana said. Death is a subject which many people in our culture prefer to ignore, Dana said. Yet more and more schools are beginning to teach about it as a way of helping students to acquire life-coping skills. Dana also said that acting out death scenes can help children to handle their feelings.

Puppets and are materials are also useful. They can give youngsters and their privacy. Teachers need preparation to deal with home problems, more than one million divorce cases in the country last year left more 1,099,000 children under 18 in single parent homes. In Massachusetts, divorces have risen by 25 percent during the past five years. Dana illustrated children's reactions by reading aloud some letters written in class by Needham 4th graders.

"People get divorced because they might not like their children," "I don't think it's good to get married because you might get into fights," wrote another student. Sometimes a child's world seems to fall apart after death or divorce. He may have to move to a new apartment and a new school. His pets may have been given away. His remaining parent may date or marry someone else.

Or one parent may expect the child to fill some of the place left by the divorced partner. Some don'ts Dana suggested: Don't expect much of a child who visits a divorced parent before or after a weekend. He may be "off the walls with tension." Don't foster a child's inability to deal with death or divorce by over protecting him and sheltering him from the fact that it is permanent. Don't take sides with one divorced parent. Teachers should make sure that both parents receive report cards.
