Miss Teenage America Is lo be chosen tonight. Driver Arrested After Long Chase, Gun Battle KEXANSVILLE, N. C. (AP) state trooper arrested a Kinston man Friday after a 17- mile gun chase that included a gun battle. Robert Becton, 22, was arrested after he wrecked his onr.

He was charged with assault and attempted assault, attempted robbery, speeding more than 100 miles an hour and failing to stop for a police car. Trooper T. Evans said lie chased Becton to question him about an attempted robbery of a merchant at Kenansville. The chase began after Ihe trooper and a Duplin Oounly deputy approached Becton and another man, Levonne Green, 28, of Kinxlon, (o question them about the wounding and attempted robbery of Ihe operator of a grocery filling station. The operator, Ivey Bowden, was shot in the abdomen and log.

Senate next year? It has been speculated that lie will. But McNuIr said at a news conference Friday he's "not anticipating anything liko that." Bcmocrat McNair, mentioned as a possible opponent for Republican Sen. Strom Thurmond, said he will announce his political plans early next year. One ycur remains in his current term. Tho possibility of a senatorial race for McNair has intrigued many South Carolina Democrats for tho past year.

Newspapers have run speculative stories but McNair has neither encouraged nor spiked tho rumors. Friends have said McKuir, who will be 48 In December, will resume his law practice when ha leaves office at the end of 1970. Bui, the rumors that he will run against Thurmond have persisted. McNair, who became governor in 1965 ivhen Gov, Donald Itus- sell resigned, seemed to close lha door Thursday on any sen- alorial race, at least temporarily. "I'm discussing my plans now with my family," he said.

South Carolina governors may not servo consecutive, elected terms. McNair ranged over a number of subjects at his news conference but concentrated on the fiscal outlook for the state.
