Carr Staff The MBTA today plans for an $8.7 --million modernization for the key Park, Washington, State and Haymarket tions. Highlights of the im-: provement program in-X- elude: i I Construction of an erv-I larged underground con-i at Washington tion, to include a "free area" for shoppers with ac- i- cess doors to Filene's and I Jordan Marsh. Opening of a 400-foot I pedestrian underground link between Park and Washington station con courses under Washington Vfc- street. The pedestrian link, a hitherto-unused passageway, will be more accessible for handicapped persons using the system be a 0 tween the stations.

I i. it The modernization program is part of a second-phase $14 million improvement for seven stations. In addition to the four downtown stations it includes Essex, Auditorium and Ashmont stations. The Federal goveerniaent has already approved a $9.6 million capital grant towards the cost. Future plans call for the 30 -foot wide passageway to have access to other retail stores in the downtown shopping district.

At Washington Station, plans call for the present lines of turnstiles at the Summer street entrance to be moved parallel to the Orange Line platform. This will be the boundary for the free shopping area, which customers will be able to enter, without paying a fare. Access to the Red Line platform will be by way of escalators to be installed near the Summer street turnstile section and under the concourse. The present stairways from the concourse down to the northbound and southbound platforms of the Red Line will be made exits only from the platforms. The expanded concourse will include part of the present Jordan March and Filene's stores.

At Park Station, major improvements will be made to the underground station platform areas on both the and the Red Lines. They will include new i.r. lighting, floor covering and refinished walls with orientation graphics. The program also calls for a new concession area. Modernization of the street level at Park Sta-.
