THEMANYH 01 mute, trumpeter" Herb Pomeroy, a Pops "import" for the evening, provided a lyrically cogent second-chorus solo as Miss Fitzgerald cajoled: "Hang in there!" At the conclusion of the song, she confided to the audience that "you can still get that on the old 'Ella Sings Gershwin' album and you can get it much cheaper nowadays." The Ellington Medley Nothing Till You Hear From Me" and "I've Got It and "Feelings," whose announcement elicited a mass "ooooohhhh" reconverted the yawning auditorium into a dimly-lit bistro. She scatted "One Note Samba" and dipped into her polychromed palette to recreate the wist-f ulness of the Ira Gershwin-' Kurt Weill gem, "My Ship." Cole Porter's "Why Can't You Behave" and "Too Darn Hot" closed a memorable concert that had to be heard so that more one day might see. SKIED DGV EVEREST CI By Ernie Santosuosso Globe Staff Boston has long played a prominent role in both the personal and professional life of Ella Fitzgerald.

She earned the soubriquet "Tisket A-Tasket Girl," after introducing the song about "the girl with the little yellow basket" at Levag-gi's on Massachusetts Avenue in 1939. As a teenaged vocalist with the Chick Webb orchestra she performed at a Harvard freshman smoker in 1938 and returned to sing for that same class at the 25th anniversary of its graduation. Five years ago Ella Fitzgerald, during her most acute crisis, underwent surgery at the Mass. Eye Ear Infirmary where her vision was saved. Now, annually, she returns to sing and swing for the Retina Foundation, and last night in Symphony Hall the First Lady of Song again kept a pledge made in 1971.

"People don't realize the importance of their eyesight," said the singer yesterday before her appearance with Arthur Fiedler and the Boston "Pops. "It's so necessary to support such organizations as the Retina Foundation. 1 ACADEMY AWARD WINNER "I'm not singing here just for myself. I'm doing this for everybody. They're finding out information every day to renedy sight problems.

Ten years ago you couldn't conceive the advances in today's treatment. It's a beautiful thing." So, last night Ella gave at the office for the Retina Foundation. Accompanied up front by pianist Tommy Flanagan, bassist Keeter Betts and drummer Bobby Durham, she balladized and bopped with the Boston Pops colossus as self-as-suredly as if she were working a gig in a smoke-filled Birdland. She worked in a dedication to Retina Foundation with "I Only Have Eyes for You" and her easy rapport with Fiedler, cultivated over many cross-country concerts together, was quickly evident. Begowned in brown chif--fon and caped sleeves, Ella delivered a glistening set of evergreens mostly Cole Porter and George Gershwin with a couple of latter-day compositions, "One Note Samba" and the current "our song" among today's newly-marrieds, "Feelings." She was relaxed and the orchestra wispily reedy behind her on "Our Love Is Here To Stay." Using a his wife, Edith, who died last March.
